Ben Bright, Assistant Director of Public Works, and Ashley Mickler, Solid Waste Business Manager, joined Wayne Larson, St. Johns County Public Affairs Director, on the Behind the SJCenes podcast on WSOS 103.9 FM. The discussion highlighted solid waste services and provided helpful guidance on yard waste collection.

Curbside Collection Safety

Small Steps, Big Impacts

Solid Waste collection happens in neighborhoods every day, often early in the morning when visibility may be lower and roads are busy with school and work traffic. A few simple steps can help keep everyone safe.

Place carts at the curb with enough space between them and away from mailboxes, parked cars, and other obstacles. This allows collection drivers to service carts safely and efficiently without needing to exit the vehicle or make repeated maneuvers.

Be mindful of collection days and avoid placing loose debris in the roadway. Materials in the street can create hazards for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

If you are driving near a collection truck, slow down and give crews plenty of space. These vehicles make frequent stops and may have workers nearby.

Taking a few extra moments to properly place materials at the curb helps protect your neighbors, our crews, and everyone traveling through the community.

Proper Disposal

Spring is a great time to clear out clutter and refresh your home. As you sort through items, consider whether they can be reused, repurposed, or donated before throwing them away. Small choices like these help reduce waste and support the community.

Some items should never go in your regular garbage. Household hazardous waste such as chemicals, paint, batteries, tires, and electronics require special handling to protect people, equipment, and the environment.

St. Johns County offers convenient drop-off locations where these items can be safely recycled or disposed of. Using these services helps prevent harmful materials from entering landfills and keeps our community clean.

Before heading out, take a moment to group your items by type and check what is accepted at each location. This will help make your visit quick and easy.

Printer Cartridges

Many manufacturers and retailers accept these cartridges for recycling. You can also bring them to one of our drop-off locations. Otherwise, they can be placed in the trash.

Furniture Items

Donation or reuse is the preferred option for items in good condition. Alternatively, contact your waste hauler or bring items to a depot - please see Drop-off Locations for important details.

You can place large, bulky items out at the curb next to your regular garbage. This includes couches, sectionals, mattresses, household furniture, etc.

Televisions

Televisions require special processing to recover the materials they're made from. Please bring them to an electronics drop-off location.
