Sustainable Holiday Tips

More Fun Less Waste

The Holiday Season is the best time of the year. It is also the most wasteful time of the year! From Thanksgiving through New Year's, America's solid waste stream increases by over 25%! Here are some ideas to have some fun while also minimizing the amount of waste we send to the landfill:

1. Give the gift of experiences instead of things.

2. Try reusable gift bags instead of wrapping paper.

3. Avoid unnecessary purchases or excess packaging.

4. Use reusable dinnerware, glasses, and napkins.

5. Try using recycled material for DIY projects and decor.

Waste After the Holidays

What Goes Where?

After Christmas, what do I do with all of the cardboard,

wrapping paper and old electronics?!

  • Cardboard boxes can be flattened and placed in your curbside recycling cart. If they don't all fit, you can bring them to one of our Drop-Off Locations.

  • Wrapping paper can be recycled as long as it isn't shiny, metallic, or glittery. Bows and ribbons cannot.

  • If you got a new device or gadget for Christmas, don't throw your old electronics away. Bring them to one of our Drop-Off Locations to be recycled and disposed of properly.

Christmas Treecycle Program

Recycle Your Tree!

Help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills during the holidays by taking advantage of this free program.

Bring your real Christmas tree to a designated drop-off location so it can be used as mulch in one of our county parks. Only clean, real trees free of decorations will be accepted.

workers and the environment. DO NOT place unused fireworks straight into your garbage or recycling. DO NOT bring unused fireworks to our transfer stations.

1. Place used or unused fireworks into a bucket of water.

2. Leave them to soak overnight.

3. Remove the water-logged fireworks and seal them in a plastic bag.

4. Place the bag in your household garbage.
