Celebrate a Sustainable Memorial Day
As you celebrate Memorial Day with family and friends, consider simple ways to reduce waste and conserve resources. Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue or heading to the beach or park, a few simple steps can make your holiday both meaningful and sustainable.
Sustainable Tips for Your Memorial Day Celebration:
-
Skip single-use items: Use reusable plates, cups, and utensils instead of disposable plastics.
-
Recycle right: Set up clearly labeled recycling bins to make it easy for guests.
-
Reduce food waste: Plan portions carefully and store leftovers for later use.
-
Stay hydrated sustainably: Encourage reusable water bottles or beverage dispensers instead of single-use bottles.
-
Shop local: Support local farmers and businesses when purchasing food and supplies.
-
Respect outdoor spaces: Clean up thoroughly and leave parks and beaches better than you found them.
These small steps can make a big impact while still enjoying the holiday.

Adopt-A-Road

Kids Ocean Day
The annual Kids Ocean Day Florida took place at Anastasia State Park on April 17th with an estimated 60 3rd-grade students from Ketterlinus Elementary and an additional 30 chaperones and volunteers. Everyone enjoyed an educational experience, visiting stations set up at the hilltop in the park where they learned about the ocean and its sea animals, water safety, and litter that is constantly being left on the beach that shouldn’t. When tourists and residents visit the beach, the only items that you should take with you are the ones you bring, and the only things that should be left behind are footprints.

Arbor Day
The St. Johns County Solid Waste Division collaborated with the City of St. Augustine Beach for its annual Arbor Day celebration. The event took place on Friday, April 17th, at City Hall. We engage with the community in educating the attendees about how the process of recycling is different between locations. Making them aware of how important it is for everyone to look up and follow the guidelines of their municipality's recycling guidelines. Everyone took home a new tree, educational materials, interactive activities, and other fun, family‑friendly resources to help promote sustainability and environmental awareness.

Proper Disposal
Spring is a great time to clear out clutter and refresh your home. As you sort through items, consider whether they can be reused, repurposed, or donated before throwing them away. Small choices like these help reduce waste and support the community.
Some items should never go in your regular garbage. Household hazardous waste such as chemicals, paint, batteries, tires, and electronics require special handling to protect people, equipment, and the environment.
St. Johns County offers convenient drop-off locations where these items can be safely recycled or disposed of. Using these services helps prevent harmful materials from entering landfills and keeps our community clean.
Before heading out, take a moment to group your items by type and check what is accepted at each location. This will help make your visit quick and easy.
