Opening Day is Just Around the Corner
The Herreshoff Marine Museum / America's Cup Hall of Fame will open for the season on Sunday, April 28th. Opening Day is a great day to come by with your friends and family to celebrate spring and our amazing Museum. Opening Day offers free admission and a variety of activities for all to enjoy.

 RELIANCE, The Hope of America is Afloat In March 1903 the expected launch date for RELIANCE was the subject of much press speculation. Estimates ran from April 7 to April 20 or later. A number of things were happening at the Herreshoff shops to support an early launching. Riveting was expected to complete April 1st. Gradually the steel workers were dropping out of line on the topsides and being moved to Morton F. Plant's schooner INGOMAR for the reason that each day the room for carrying on the work of plating and riveting narrowed down. Read More... |

New Classes - Field Trips Bookings Now - Summer Seamanship Classes For Youth and Adults are Open for Enrollment
HALF HULL BUILDING CLASS: Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, May 7/8, 14/15, and 21/22. $450/person (your own tools are encouraged, but not required) This class will take you from an explanation of lines drawings and drafting to a half hull you can take home with you. This first class series will be building a model of the much-loved Herreshoff 12 1/2. To enroll email: education@herreshoff.org
PAINT AND VARNISH CLASS - Offered twice: April 27-28 (9am - 3pm) or May 11-12. $250 Day 1 will be devoted to varnish, including an explanation of varnishing and its properties, uses, and characteristics. After proper prep work, tutorials on proper techniques, students will try their hands with sample pieces of materials, and then on the boat itself. The first day's class ends with proper brush cleaning and storage. Day 2 will cover topside painting, including brush and roll-and-tip techniques, plus an explanation of bottom painting. SUMMER SEAMANSHIP CLASSES Including our signature overnight trips aboard KESTREL, our classes are based on the tried and true curriculum we have been using for over ten years. In addition we are incorporating US Sailing materials, methods, and certifications wherever it is logical to do so. For example, we will offer the Basic Keelboat Certification this year for adults and youth. The US Sailing Certification Series continues with Basic Cruising, Bareboat Cruising, Coastal Navigation and so forth. We also offer women-only classes on Friday evenings. You will be enthralled. Stepped the mast and bowsprit of RELIANCE. Over the next three days a strong northeast gale prevents any further work rigging the defender.

Herreshoff Work Party

Come by and help us prepare for our Opening Day. Volunteers will help staff clean, organize and prep the Museum for the busy days ahead. Much help is needed to get us ship shape and Bristol fashion and all are welcome to this community building effort to beautify our Museum.

Thank you to Our Waterfront Volunteers
Volunteer workdays are well underway. We were very fortunate to have 6 waterfront volunteers with us this month to prepare our docks. We are looking forward to a great boating season! Thank to to all who helped offer their time to help our Museum.

On March 21st we received our hull and main mast! The hull weights in at 800 lbs and the mast at 100 lbs. She should weigh in at 1,750 lbs fully massed.
