Substance Affected Youth (SAY) at

Recovery Palooza

Over 200 kids and 100 adults enjoyed the SAY Program’s recreational opportunities during Recovery Palooza on September 23. The team’s manpower was bolstered by volunteers from Eastern Maine Community College’s Criminal Justice Program, the Law Enforcement Program at United Technologies Center, and the University of Maine’s School of Nursing. The event would not have been possible without the extra help.

  • Youth were able to play several games, including basketball and Connect Four.

Safety Issues – Open Microphone: None reported this month.

Of the twenty incidents reported, four required medical attention and one resulted in lost time from work. 3 slip/trip/fall – same level; 2 client interaction; 3 cut/puncture/scrape; 5 hit against or by; 2 pain/strain; 1 illness; 1 automobile accident; 2 animal interaction; 1 exposure.

Harlow Street Building Inspection – The Harlow Street office had a building inspection on September 8th with Michelle Martin, Sr. Loss Control Consultant with Cross Insurance. The review went well and some suggestions were made, which are outlined below. Building safety tips have been posted at entrances/exits. Harassment postings have been added to reception areas.

  • Avoid tailgating, don’t let any other individuals through an access door unless they are recognized and badged through.
  • Secure the main reception office by closing and locking the door into this area.
  • An (Emergency Exit Only) sign should be posted on Harlow Street Emergency Exit. This door has a crash bar and is only used in an emergency as an egress route.
  • Deadbolt needed at maintenance garage entrance.
  • Driver fares box should be out of common area and (not so easily identified)
  • Consider methods to secure Family Visit Program from other office areas. While all visitors are escorted visitors could access other programs once in the building.
  • Prohibit/limit employees from working alone particularly at night or weekends or when assistance is unavailable.
  • State clearly to clients and employees that violence is not permitted or tolerated.
  • Annual training should include a review of security measures in place and employee responsibilities.

Safety Site Visits - Knox County: Site visits were done on September 15th in Knox County with Michelle Martin, Sr. Loss Control Consultant with Cross Insurance. There were a few minor suggestions, including having eye washing stations on site and secondary labeling for hazardous materials.

Old Business - Hazard Communication – Training document has been shared. Handbook has been updated and the video training is pending.
