Greetings from afar, POJ!
Well, honestly, greetings from close to my home. June 1 found me at The Gayton Kirk Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Virginia. Their pastor was away on a hiking adventure I want to hear about, so I was more than happy to worship in a congregation (well, the building at least) that I’ve visited somewhat often over the last two years.
The first Sunday in June was sunny and warm. Only once has it rained during my church visits—and even then, it stopped once I got to the church! Gayton Kirk, while a “city church,” sits on a wooded lot, with a generous amount of land and flora between the sanctuary and the street. When you step out of your vehicle, you could easily think you’re far from town in a wonderfully wooded expanse. It’s quite possible that worship at “the Kirk” begins the moment you leave your car and enter this peaceful, nature-filled setting.
The Kirk is busy on Sundays! There are usually three scheduled worship services: Celtic, Traditional, and Jazz Vespers. Their bulletin outlines an active schedule of events and gatherings throughout the week. On this particular Sunday, Communion was celebrated at both the traditional and vespers services. The evening Jazz Vespers was a new experience for me—and well worth it. The trio of musicians—piano, bass, and drums—offered a beautiful, contemplative backdrop that gave each of us space to simply sit and be present.
Gayton Kirk is an open and friendly congregation that welcomes many activities supporting the well-being of their neighborhood. I encourage those in the metro area to check out their early or evening Sunday worship times. You might experience our faith in a refreshing new way—and perhaps find something that could work in your own church!
Blessings to all,
| | Ginter Park Presbyterian Church: Juneteenth Celebration |
Ginter Park’s 3rd Tuesday Gathering is in honor of Juneteenth, with food and discussion centered on how to take action against racism and injustice. This will be in collaboration with organizations addressing these issues, all contributing to the broader discussion of liberating ourselves from the tangled web of prejudice and systemic oppression that surrounds us. A donation of $20 per person is appreciated to help cover our costs, please bring a side dish. No one will be turned away, so please come regardless of whether you can bring a dish or make a donation.
