The Power of Opportunity

Photo of Laura Chisholm, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at DCCC.

Greetings!

Sometimes the impact of education shows up in big numbers, like a $300,000 grant that creates new workforce pathways for our community. Sometimes it shows up in the journey of an alumnus who discovers a passion at DCCC and goes on to become a higher education leader. Sometimes it shows up in the story of a student who gains access to the skills, equipment, and support needed to build a new future.

This month, we're sharing stories that demonstrate how opportunity changes lives. Together, these stories reflect the power of education, community partnerships, and philanthropy to open doors for students and strengthen Delaware and Chester Counties.

Thank you for helping create opportunities that change lives.

Gratefully,

Laura Chisholm, Ed.D., CFRE

$300,000 = Tuition-Free Manufacturing Skills Training & Certification

The Delaware County Community College Educational Foundation has been awarded a $300,390 grant from the Chappell Culpeper Family Foundation to launch the Manufacturing Pathways Initiative.

Designed for low-income individuals facing barriers to education and employment, this tuition-free initiative directly addresses two major regional challenges: an acute labor shortage driven by an aging manufacturing workforce and the "GED barrier," which prevents adults without high school equivalency from accessing financial aid and technical training.

The program offers a seamless educational pathway combining GED preparation with either a 34-credit Computer Numerical Control (CNC) manufacturing certificate or a 15-credit Computer-Aided Drafting (CADD) certificate, with options to later pursue an Associate Degree in Applied Science. Available at DCCC's Marple Campus and Southeast Center in Drexel Hill, the initiative prepares students for entry-level careers in high-demand industries while building a stronger talent pipeline for local employers.

The Tools to Turn Dreams into Careers

What happens when students have access to the right training — and the right tools?

For Skyler Bailey, returning to school once seemed impossible. As a single mother of four balancing work and family, she wasn’t sure she could pursue her long-held dream of attending culinary school. Then she discovered Delaware County Community College’s new Southeast Center in Drexel Hill—and state-of-the-art kitchens that made her feel like she had stepped onto the set of MasterChef. Today, she’s working toward her dream of opening a gluten-free bakery.

Skyler is one of many students benefiting from DCCC’s Tools for Tomorrow initiative, which is helping equip the Southeast Center with the professional-grade tools, technology and training spaces students need to enter growing fields. From culinary arts and healthcare to biotechnology and skilled trades, this new location is designed to connect students with hands-on preparation for family-sustaining careers.

And sometimes, having the right tools can make all the difference. DCCC graduate Russell McLarnon received a full set of tools and a pair of work boots as he prepared to begin his career in HVAC. “They literally give you the tools to succeed,” he says.

Read the full story in the Delaware County Daily Times, meet the students whose lives are being changed and see how Tools for Tomorrow is helping build the region’s workforce of the future.

Alumni Spotlight:

From DCCC Student to Higher Education Leader

Dr. Lance Bennett, Class of 2012

When Lance Bennett, Ed.D. first arrived at Delaware County Community College (DCCC), he felt uncertain about his academic and career direction. However, his experience at DCCC quickly turned into a pivotal period of self-discovery.

A major turning point in Bennett’s college journey came in his Communication Arts coursework, where a professor encouraged him to take advantage of an honors opportunity that pushed him beyond traditional class assignments. Bennett conducted extensive research and authored a 25-page paper examining Barack Obama’s "A More Perfect Union" speech narrative and rationality.

This research culminated in his first conference presentation at the 2013 Eastern Communication Association Undergraduate Scholars Conference in Pittsburgh and he states “That was significant because it was the first time I really saw myself as a researcher and scholar. It changed what I thought was possible for me.”

Beyond the classroom, meaningful relationships with faculty and staff played a major role in Lance's growth. Professors recognized his potential, encouraged him to pursue ambitious goals, and helped him navigate scholarship and financial aid opportunities. For him “Those relationships taught me the importance of mentors, sponsors, and people who are willing to see something in you before you fully see it in yourself.”

Lance also gained valuable hands-on experience and financial support through a work-study position in the then, Office of First Year Experiences and was also awarded several scholarships during his time at DCCC--which provided critical financial support. Together, these experiences taught him that educational success is not just about raw ability, but about learning how to navigate institutions, build a network of mentors, seek resources, and advocate for oneself.

The opportunities at DCCC sparked Lance’s deep interest in communication, research, learning, and student development. He believes, “The combination of academic opportunities and practical experiences helped me understand that college could be a place where I developed both intellectually and professionally.”

Today Dr. Bennett is Deputy Director for Postsecondary and Workforce Success at the Communities Foundation of Texas, President and Founder of The People’s Institute for the Common Good, and Adjunct Professor for the Doctor of Leadership and Higher Education program at St. Edward’s University.

Reflecting on his path, he credits DCCC with showing him that community colleges are powerful places for deep intellectual and personal development—where true access means empowering students and communities to lead with vison, courage, and purpose. He adds that “…DCCC is still very much a part of who I am. It helped me become the kind of person who wants to make the path a little clearer for the people coming behind me.”

For students beginning their journey at DCCC today, Lance shares several key lessons from his experience:

  1. Do not underestimate where you start: Take your coursework seriously but look beyond the classroom to fully engage with the college experience.
  2. Seek out mentors and build relationships: Connect with professors, ask questions about scholarships, and explore honors opportunities.
  3. Get involved: Join student organizations, apply for work-study positions, and take advantage of research opportunities.
  4. Learn to navigate the institution: Share your career aspirations with others, ask questions, and lean on the network of support surrounding you.
