Do you use the DRDP?

DRDP is being updated and your input is needed!

The California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) are collaborating to gather input from all the educators who use the Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP). Your engagement and voice are important to the state’s early learning assessments revision.

This is your opportunity to contribute to the development of materials to support use of the new DRDP! They are eager to learn from your knowledge and experience, so please take a look at the upcoming opportunities to get involved in this important work.

Who should provide their input?

There are four studies/opportunities taking place between summer 2023 and spring 2024. Participants requested are different in each study, but may include:

  • Infant/toddler teachers and special educators who use the DRDP
  • Preschool teachers and special educators who use the DRDP
  • Family Child Care providers or FCCH network contractors who use the DRDP
  • TK and K teachers and special educators (prior experience with the DRDP is preferred, but not required)
  • Grade 1, 2, and 3 teachers and special educators to review measures in the approaches to learning and social-emotional development domains (no experience with the DRDP required)
  • Local study contacts (e.g., education coordinators, curriculum specialists, administrators, teacher leaders)

What is the DRDP?

The Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) is an observational assessment instrument developed by the California Department of Education (CDE) for all young children from early infancy through kindergarten.

The DRDP (2015) was developed by CDE through a collaboration between the Early Education Division and the Special Education Division for use in the state’s early childhood programs. State-level oversight for the DRDP is currently shared by CDE and the California Department of Social Services (CDSS). CDE provides oversight for the use of the DRDP in California State Preschool Programs (CSPP), federal reporting to the Office of Special Education, and optional use in transitional kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten settings. CDSS provides oversight for the use of the DRDP in federally-funded state-supported infant/toddler, preschool, and afterschool programs.

More about the DRDP Update Project

As part of CDE’s historic investment in Universal Preschool (UPK) and Preschool to Grade 3 initiatives (P-3) and in collaboration with CDSS and SED, the DRDP will be reviewed and updated. The new DRDP (2025) instrument, like the DRDP (2015), will span infant/toddler, preschool, TK, and K settings for all the domains, with similar mandates for its use in these settings. The DRDP (2025) will also expand the approaches to learning and social-emotional development domains for use in grades 1, 2, and 3. Learn more here.
