Medical School Outlines Strategic Priorities for 2024-2027

As we prepare for the creation of the new Rutgers School of Medicine (RSOM) and an accreditation visit in January 2027, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is working with New Jersey Medical School on developing the integrated RSOM mission, vision, values, and strategic plan for academic year 2027-'28 and beyond, while concurrently implementing strategic priorities for RWJMS through academic year 2026-'27.

A presentation outlining the priorities, strategies and one- to three-year outcomes for each strategy in each of the medical school's missions (education, research, clinical care, community health, and global health) is now available on the intranet.

The medical school's ongoing priorities reflect several cross-cultural themes:

  • Creating a more inclusive and engaging organizational culture
  • Enhancing the relationship between the school, hospital partner, and health system
  • Demonstrating the value of academic medicine
  • Responding to the primary care crisis

Boggs Center new leadership image

In the wake of the retirement of founding director Deborah M. Spitalnik, PhD, The Boggs Center on Disability and Human Development, New Jersey's federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD), has reorganized its leadership structure.

Colleen McLaughlin, MEd, has been named UCEDD director and deputy director of The Boggs Center. Previously associate director, Dr. McLaughlin has more than two decades of experience in the field, focused on disability policy; inclusive, person-centered community supports; self-determination; direct support workforce development; service coordination; and quality improvement. During her time at The Boggs Center, she led its disability policy, community training, and technical assistance initiatives; coordinated UCEDD-related functions and strategic planning; and represented the center on numerous boards and committees statewide and beyond.

Carrie Coffield, PhD, has been named director of NJLEND, The Boggs Center's Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities program. Dr. Coffield has served as training director of NJLEND since its inception in 2016. She is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the medical school and serves as director of preservice training at The Boggs Center. Her areas of expertise include health disparities in diagnosis and access to care for children with autism and their families, transition to adult healthcare, and educating healthcare providers about developmental disabilities.

Congratulations to you both on your new roles!

Wellness at Work

The medical school's Staff Council hosted the first of its annual Employee Health and Wellness Fairs in New Brunswick last week at the Clinical Academic Building, to great success. Plus, free giveaways and raffles!

If you missed the first event, a second Employee Health and Wellness Fair is scheduled for the Piscataway campus on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Great Hall, 675 Hoes Lane.

Hope to see you there!

Medical Group Hosts 'Olympic' Event

A little friendly competition can go a long way! On Friday, Sept. 13, and Thursday, Sept. 19, the Patient Experience Team from RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group and Rutgers Health hosted the 2024 Rutgers Human Experience Olympics.

The games were meant to bring employees together outside of their practice setting to relax, laugh, and compete for individual gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as department-specific awards.

Activities included R.U.T.G.E.R.S. basketball, soccer bowling, ring toss, corn hole, a blindfolded LEGO listening activity, and (a participant favorite) therapy dogs. There were raffles, giveaways, and popcorn as well. We enjoyed hearing the cheering for coworkers and laughter throughout the event.

Events like these are hosted throughout the year within departments and across the medical group to build team morale, which carries over to our clinical settings. Thanks to RWJBarnabas Health system leadership for attending and supporting the event!

Plans Under Way for 2025 Kindness Day Initiatives

Kindness Matters square image

World Kindness Day is just a month away, and the medical school is preparing a number of initiatives for Nov. 13 and beyond, to emphasize the message that Kindness Matters.

Plans include Dean Amy P. Murtha, MD; initiative creator and Vice Dean Keith P. Lewis, RPh, MD; and other kindness ambassadors from the medical school and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. A full schedule of the day's festivities will be posted in upcoming issues of Weekly View.

Be sure to check out our Kindness website to see some of the fun from last year.

We'd also love to continue spreading the good word. We invite you to share an act of kindness you experienced at the medical school that showed why kindness matters. We hope to feature some of these stories in future issues of Weekly View's Kindness Corner. Share your story here!

Staff Council Outreach Event Benefits Elijah's Promise

snack packs loaded for delivery to Elijahs Promise

The medical school's Staff Council organized a special outreach event to create "snack packs" for clients of Elijah's Promise.

Founded in August 1989, New Brunswick-based Elijah's Promise Community Kitchen has grown to a multi-service organization that serves more than 375,000 free meals each year throughout central New Jersey. Medical school students and faculty also are involved in the Promise Clinic, an initiative of the Homeless and Indigent Population Health Outreach Project (HIPHOP) that provides free primary care to Elijah's Promise clients.

Through the Staff Council's efforts, 362 snack packs were donated to Elijah's Promise last week. Thanks to you all!

Survey responses will guide efforts to promote professional fulfillment and make Rutgers Health a better place to practice, educate, and conduct research. The survey invitation has been emailed to faculty, staff, and residents with a unique link to access the survey.

You may quickly access your survey by clicking one of the following links. This will direct you to a website where you can enter your institutional work email address.
