Dr. Mouradian Selected for This Year's Gorenstein Award
M. Maral Mouradian, MD, Distinguished Professor and William Dow Lovett Professor of Neurology, and founding director of the medical school's Institute for Neurological Therapeutics, has been named the 2022 recipient of Rutgers University's Daniel Gorenstein Memorial Award.

Established in 1993, the Daniel Gorenstein Memorial Award is presented each year to a university faculty member noted for outstanding scholarly achievement and exceptional service to the university.

The 2022 Daniel Gorenstein Memorial Award ceremony and lecture will be held Thursday, Dec. 1, from 4 - 6 p.m. at Winants Hall. If you're interested in attending the ceremony, please RVSP here.

Med Student Advances to Semifinals in AMA's National Research Competition
Leela Biswas
Leelabati (Leela) Biswas, an MD/PhD student at the medical school, has been selected as a semifinalist in the 2022 American Medical Association Research Challenge, ranking among the top 50 of all medical student, resident and fellow research submissions nationally.

The semifinal event is being held from Oct. 20-22; the top five advance to the finals, with a chance at the $10,000 grand prize.

Leela has been working in the lab of Karen Schindler, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Genetics at Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on precision reproductive medicine -- specifically, female infertility. She is investigating genetic mutations that may cause patients to have poor-quality eggs, a leading cause of infertility.

"We hope that this work will lead to the development of clinical genetic biomarkers that predict egg quality, unlocking personalized infertility care and better reproductive outcomes," Leela says.

Congratulations on your achievement, Leela!

Commentary co-authors Lawrence C. Kleinman, MD, MPH, professor, vice chair for academic development and PopQuIS division chief; and Kristine H. Schmitz, MD, MPH, assistant professor of pediatrics in the PopQuIS division, spoke with EBN Associate Editor Kerry Gaskin in a recent BMJ talk medicine podcast about how the quality of care in the hospital of delivery has a direct relation with more unexpected neonatal complications in Black and Hispanic infants.
