Dr. Hudson Contributes to National Report on Improving Veteran Health
Shawna Hudson, PhD, professor, Henry Rutgers Chair of Family Medicine and chief of the Division of Research in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, was a member of the committee that drafted a newly released report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, Achieving Whole Health, A New Approach for Veterans and the Nation.
The consensus study report focuses on whole health care, a people-centered, integrated approach that shifts the focus from a reactive, disease-oriented system to one that prioritizes prevention and well-being. The report explores ways to scale and spread and identifies five foundational elements of an effective #WholeHealth care system. It must be people-centered, comprehensive & holistic, upstream-focused, equitable and accountable, and grounded in team well-being.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Samueli Foundation, and the Whole Health Institute commissioned the NASEM to establish a committee to provide guidance on how to fill gaps and create processes to accelerate the transformation to whole health care for veterans, both inside and outside the VA system, and the rest of the U.S. population. The resulting report presents findings and recommendations that provide a roadmap for improving health and well-being for veterans and the nation.

Study from Dr. Wackym Investigates How to Help Speed Recovery of a Rare Inner Ear Problem
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School physician-scientists, led by P. Ashley Wackym, MD, professor and chair, Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, developed a test model to enhance understanding of a condition known as “third window syndrome,” caused by an abnormal third mobile window of the inner ear. Normally humans have two of these windows. When a third “window” is present – at birth, after trauma or for reasons that remain unclear – patients can suffer sound-induced dizziness, hearing internal sounds unusually well (one-third can hear their eyes move or blink), and chronic headaches. Patients can also suffer cognitive dysfunction – such as impaired memory, poor concentration, spatial disorientation, slurred speech, out-of-body experiences and crippling anxiety.
Dr. Wackym, Todd Mowery, assistant professor, of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery, and other colleagues in the department developed the animal testing model, then studied how the animals responded to pressure and sound stimulation. They found that the large window resulted in similar electrophysiologic findings as observed in human patients with SSCD. They also discovered the bony holes created in the inner ear healed spontaneously, with all hearing and balance functioning returning to baseline.
“This will enable future studies to test SSCD conditions before, during and after recovery — findings that could be applied to human patients,” Dr. Wackym said.

U.S. News & World Report Expert Opinion Survey to Open Soon; Your Vote Counts!
The expert opinion survey window is opening soon for the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals 2023-24 ranking. All physicians who are board-certified in the identified specialty areas are eligible to vote in the Best Hospitals survey, which is conducted by Doximity.
Please be on the lookout for an email from Doximity with a link to your ballot. If you use the Doximity app, you will also receive a notification there.
Adult specialists can vote for up to five hospitals in your area. Pediatric specialists can vote for up to 10 hospitals. Your vote for Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) helps the hospital achieve High Performing ratings or national Top 50 rankings (Gold Badges). Both are significant recognitions for your programs. Expert opinion scoring is significantly weighted in the overall program evaluation in the adult and pediatric surveys; last year, RWJUH programs for cancer and gastroenterology/GI surgery increased their reputational scores by increasing voting.
Please help this year by casting your vote via Doximity.com or the Doximity app, and encourage your colleagues at other institutions to vote for RWJUH on their surveys. Thank you for your support!
