TRUSTEES CORNER

We hope you and your families enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving! We wish you joy and peace during the upcoming Christmas and holiday season.

It is important we inform our community about the road ahead of us in regards to safety services and the Impact to Law Enforcement and EMS & Fire Protection in Concord Township. Please watch the discussion from the Nov. 15th public meeting on our Facebook page or you can find the entire meeting on YouTube. The Trustees will be working through some difficult decisions in the upcoming months in light of our Nov. 7th levy failure. The Concord Township Safety Services Levy (Issue 3) on the November 7th, ballot, failed by 743 votes. The replacement levy for Safety Services would have directly funded both police and fire protection in Concord Township. Currently, the amount of funds collected by the existing levy are not adequate to support the rising cost of these services in Concord Township. The township has not had an increase in eight years.

The last levy increase supporting safety forces in Concord was approved by voters during the 2015 election. Since then, EMS and Fire Department call volume has increased 35%. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department call volume is up over 20% and since 2019, the rate of serious crimes in Concord has increased by 33%. The law enforcement staffing levels remain below the recommended levels for population per FBI crime statistics.

“We understand these are challenging times for everyone. We have an obligation to listen to our constituents and be fiscally responsible. Moving forward, we will need to evaluate and analyze the difficult situation that we are in with a constrained budget. There will be cuts that need to be made. We do not want to impact safety to a point where it’s detrimental to the community. So, it’s imperative that we have constructive discussions so we can do what is best for the community while being fiscally responsible,” said Carl Dondorfer, Trustee and also the current chief of police at Waite Hill Village.

Amy Lucci, Trustee added, “While [the levy failure] is disappointing, we appreciate the voters and their support. We appreciate the questions we received from residents. We will be looking at how we can make changes. The most important thing is that safety will remain a priority, and we will have to find a way to maintain that priority while being fiscally responsible.”

“These are challenging times. Due to the failure of the levy, the difficult reality is that we will need to make reductions of fire and police protection. It is an unavoidable reality. We have been very committed to public safety and have made it a priority. However, now we will have to work within this constrained budget. It is a difficult position to be in. We remain dedicated to keeping our community safe and we will continue to work to find the best way to move forward,” Morgan McIntosh, Trustee commented.

Township officials and department heads are working on a funding plan for the future of police, EMS and fire service in Concord Township heading into 2024 operating without the sought funding increase. Additional information will be released as details are confirmed relating to staffing and service levels for the 2024 budget and appropriations. Please follow us on Facebook and visit our website to stay up to date on the latest information. We are also available for office hours or via email or phone.

ZONING DEPARTMENT

Tips on How to Locate Your Property Markers

Property markers (pins) are metal pins placed at every corner of the property, including any angle or change of direction of the boundary line. Each pin is shown on the survey of each property. Property owners are responsible for knowing where their property lines are when applying for zoning permits for projects such as installing fences, building additions, and sheds. Property pin location is important information to avoid legal and neighborhood disputes. The property lines or boundary lines are the defined points where one person’s land ends and the neighboring land begins. The following steps may assist property owners with locating pins and identifying property lines.  Click here for more

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Fire Station #1 Ribbon Cutting

On October 23rd our dream became reality as we moved into the new Fire Station #1.

We are beyond grateful for the support we have received from the Concord Township community over the years. We are also thankful for all who were able to attend our November 16th ribbon cutting ceremony and open house. As a tribute to the over 300 firefighters who have served in the department since its inception in 1948, we performed a variation of the long standing fire tradition of “wet down” by spraying water over our new fire station.

To see excerpts from our Ribbon cutting and open house, visit our webpage: https://concordtwp.com/departments/fire/new-fire-station-project/

We wish you all a safe and happy holiday season
