December 2023 Issue #6

From District Governor Russ-

Greetings Rotarians and Friends,

This month we will be celebrating the Winter Solstice on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at 10:27 pm EST. This is the shortest day of the year with only 9 hours, 4 minutes of daylight and considered the first day of winter. I prefer to look at this occasion as a time when each day becomes longer than the day before.

I have nearly finished my club visits, with only one remaining. I thank all of you for the warm welcome and gifts Barb & I received at all the club meetings. Without a doubt, the opportunity as District Governor to meet so many great Rotarians & learn about the work that you do is the greatest blessing.

Now it is time to focus on completing your goals for 2023 and finalizing plans for 2024. Do you have written goals, are they measurable and do you have an action plan to reach those goals?

On Saturday, December 9 from 9am – 5pm, you have an opportunity to develop an action plan to ensure you and your club members increase your impact, expand your reach in the community, enhance member engagement and increase your club’s ability to adapt. This will be a hands-on event in Troy Michigan with Rotarians from 6 districts covering Michigan and Southwest Ontario. All this for only $25, including a light breakfast and lunch! You can learn more and register at click here

Membership. It is a universal concern among all clubs in our zone and should be a priority for all Rotarians. Keeping ourselves and other members engaged and bringing in new members is vital to maintaining a vibrant organization. If you want a Rotary club that has an impact on your community and the world, you must be the one actively promoting the club and asking other leaders to join.

Our Rotary Theme for December is Disease Prevention and Treatment. Rotary supports health education programs that explain how diseases are spread and promote ways to reduce the risk of transmission. Rotary members bring services and facilities to underserved communities struggling with outbreaks and health care access. Clubs also focus on prevention by providing health education and routine hearing, vision, and dental care.

The January theme is Vocational Service. This Avenue of Service encourages members to serve other people through their vocations, education, skillsets, which encourages high ethical standards.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION’S GOALS FOR DISEASE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

Rotary supports activities that reduce the causes and effects of disease. We enable members to prevent and treat disease and support people’s health by promoting projects that limit the spread of communicable diseases, reduce the incidence and effect of noncommunicable diseases, and strengthen health care systems.

A health care system includes the public, private, and nongovernmental organizations that provide health services. The World Health Organization considers a good health system one that “delivers quality services to all people, when and where they need them.”

We can accomplish our goals in disease prevention and treatment by:

  • Improving the capacity of local health care professionals
  • Promoting disease prevention and treatment programs that limit the spread of communicable diseases and reduce the incidence and effect of noncommunicable diseases
  • Strengthening health care systems
  • Providing clinical treatment and rehabilitation for physical disabilities
  • Funding graduate scholarships for career-minded professionals related to disease prevention and treatment

Windsor (1918) welcomes returning Vocational Training Team

At its November 20th meeting, the club celebrated the return of member and midwife Andrea Cassidy (center) from Tanzania after two years of planning for the TANZANIA MATERNAL NEWBORN VOCATIONAL TRAINING! She and the team supported local midwives and healthcare professionals in their efforts to decrease infant and maternal mortality rates in the Shia District.

Rita Rampure (above right), a friend of Rotary, was a critical donor to the project and was recognized with a Paul Harris Fellow during the meeting for donating a new Ultrasound Machine to the Siha District Hospital. This donation, along with the VTT, will drastically change the outcome of healthy births in the region and the care that expectant mothers receive throughout their pregnancy.

Thank you to Andrea and her team for the work that they have done to bring essential healthcare to the people of Maasai.

We need your club news!

Please make sure you email your club's news and upcoming events by the 20th of the prior month to [email protected].
