Jessica Mathews ('14) sends us the following update on life after Westminster:
"I went to The King's College in New York City between 2014-2018 where I received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a minor in Journalism. I was the editor-in-chief of my student newspaper, the Empire State Tribune, where I profiled a student experiencing gender dysphoria at a Christian college and received an award for my breaking news coverage of a terrorist attack near the college.
"I am a Senior Writer at Fortune Magazine, where I write a daily newsletter (called Term Sheet) on venture capital, private equity, and startups. I also write feature stories for the digital and print magazine. Since arriving at Fortune, I’ve covered the unraveling of the digital mortgage startup Better and revealed the financial ties between Walmart heiress Alice Walton and the electric vehicle company Canoo. I’ve also written about drone technology innovation on the Choctaw reservation in Oklahoma, European investors bussing Ukrainians out of a warzone, and written an unauthorized profile on the most powerful crypto investor in the world, Chris Dixon. Prior to Fortune, I was a wealth management reporter at Financial Planning Magazine, where I uncovered controversial fees at Vanguard, wrote about why companies like Robinhood restricted trading in GameStop in 2021, and revealed how financial institutions like Wells Fargo and Charles Schwab were responding to the COVID pandemic.
"On the weekends, you can usually find me on a trail somewhere, whether it’s road, gravel, or mountain biking, hiking, or walking my dog, Copper, who I adopted earlier this year. I tutor English to refugees in Northwest Arkansas, where I moved during the pandemic from NYC. I got my scuba diving certification with my sister Rebekah this summer on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, so you’ll likely find me doing more dives in the future. During one week in July, I biked 468 miles across the state of Iowa for RAGBRAI 2022 on my Grizl 6 gravel bike, camping in small towns and eating pork chops along the way (Seriously–way too many pork chops)."
Jessica says that her favorite WA memory is, "The Mock Trial state championship my sophomore year, for sure. I can’t speak for my fellow lawyers Amy or Susie, but I still get worked up over the last round against Montgomery Bell that we should have won in a landslide. The injustice! Speaking of, I offer my deepest apologies to Mr. Kinney, who I regret to have disappointed by not going to law school."
Fun fact: "Georgianna Wells ('16) followed me to New York and has become one of my closest friends. She is, by far, one of the most talented and passionate people I know. Last November we went on a road trip together along the coast of Ireland. She can attest that I’m apparently much better at driving on the left side of the road than I am on the right."
