The Defender Dispatch - Alumni Newsletter - Fall 2022

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Caroline Walker ('15) graduated from The King's College in New York City with a BA in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics and a minor in Theology. She now works as Chief of Staff at The Philos Project, a Christian nonprofit centered on the Middle East. "One fun fact about my my job," she says, "I've gone to the Middle East, specifically Israel and parts of Palestine, three times in the past three years. It's been an incredible experience and I hope to go back again soon!"

Of her hobbies, Caroline reports: "I've been interested in music, singing, and dancing since I was a kid, and that hasn't stopped! I love finding new jazz venues throughout New York. I sing and write songs, I'm learning to play guitar, and I still take dance classes in the city. I'm also a thrift and vintage fanatic. I'm interested in global affairs and international development, which led me to work at a nonprofit focused on the Middle East."

Of her fondest memory of WA, Caroline says, "Besides winning the Cicero Latin award, which is something I brag about to this day, one of my my fondest memories at Westminster was the choir singing the national anthem at a Grizzlies game."

Jessica Mathews ('14) sends us the following update on life after Westminster:

"I went to The King's College in New York City between 2014-2018 where I received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and a minor in Journalism. I was the editor-in-chief of my student newspaper, the Empire State Tribune, where I profiled a student experiencing gender dysphoria at a Christian college and received an award for my breaking news coverage of a terrorist attack near the college.

"I am a Senior Writer at Fortune Magazine, where I write a daily newsletter (called Term Sheet) on venture capital, private equity, and startups. I also write feature stories for the digital and print magazine. Since arriving at Fortune, I’ve covered the unraveling of the digital mortgage startup Better and revealed the financial ties between Walmart heiress Alice Walton and the electric vehicle company Canoo. I’ve also written about drone technology innovation on the Choctaw reservation in Oklahoma, European investors bussing Ukrainians out of a warzone, and written an unauthorized profile on the most powerful crypto investor in the world, Chris Dixon. Prior to Fortune, I was a wealth management reporter at Financial Planning Magazine, where I uncovered controversial fees at Vanguard, wrote about why companies like Robinhood restricted trading in GameStop in 2021, and revealed how financial institutions like Wells Fargo and Charles Schwab were responding to the COVID pandemic.

"On the weekends, you can usually find me on a trail somewhere, whether it’s road, gravel, or mountain biking, hiking, or walking my dog, Copper, who I adopted earlier this year. I tutor English to refugees in Northwest Arkansas, where I moved during the pandemic from NYC. I got my scuba diving certification with my sister Rebekah this summer on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, so you’ll likely find me doing more dives in the future. During one week in July, I biked 468 miles across the state of Iowa for RAGBRAI 2022 on my Grizl 6 gravel bike, camping in small towns and eating pork chops along the way (Seriously–way too many pork chops)."

Jessica says that her favorite WA memory is, "The Mock Trial state championship my sophomore year, for sure. I can’t speak for my fellow lawyers Amy or Susie, but I still get worked up over the last round against Montgomery Bell that we should have won in a landslide. The injustice! Speaking of, I offer my deepest apologies to Mr. Kinney, who I regret to have disappointed by not going to law school."

Fun fact: "Georgianna Wells ('16) followed me to New York and has become one of my closest friends. She is, by far, one of the most talented and passionate people I know. Last November we went on a road trip together along the coast of Ireland. She can attest that I’m apparently much better at driving on the left side of the road than I am on the right."

Amanda Hall ('08) recently spoke at our Upper School Assembly, where she discussed her ten weeks of missionary work with refugees and internally displaced persons in Poland and Ukraine.

Josh Inman, Sullivan Baker ('22), Mary Blake Fletcher ('22), and Marianna Jordan ('22) gather around their favorite Tennessee Vol, Ben Bolton ('22), on gameday

Great to See You at the Whole Hog Roast!

A couple weeks ago, dads, granddads, teachers, and alumni all enjoyed fellowship at the Whole Hog Roast at the Halford barn. It was a beautiful fall evening, with alumni parent J Hickman and his band playing.
