Ashley Lunkenheimer Voted New Chair of Delaware County Board of Elections
The Delaware County Board of Elections voted to appoint Ashley Lunkenheimer the new Chair. The reorganization followed the appointment of Scott Alberts to fill the vacancy on the panel created by the retirement of Gerald Lawrence, a Board member since 2004 and its Chair since 2020.
“Being elected Chair of this Board is an extreme honor,” said Ashley Lunkenheimer. “Together, we will continue the work of protecting the integrity of our elections, improving voter services, and preserving the public’s trust in this cornerstone of our democracy.”
Ms. Lunkenheimer began serving on the Delaware County Board of Elections in 2020.
Ms. Lunkenheimer is a lawyer with experience as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and later, working with a top international law firm, and previously serving as in-house counsel for a multi-billion dollar healthcare company. In addition, she has built contacts across government, corporate and community leaders in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Ms. Lunkenheimer earned a bachelor's at Amherst College, a master's in social work at Columbia University and her law degree at University of Pennsylvania, where she also graduated in the top 5 percent of her class and was a member of the prestigious Law Review. Ms. Lunkenheimer served as the first captain of the US Women's Developmental National Rugby Team. Ashley and her wife, Starla, live in Media, where they are raising their three children.
Mr. Alberts was appointed this month in a unanimous vote by County Council to serve in the post vacated by Mr. Lawrence. Mr. Alberts’ experience in elections includes past service as the elected Treasurer of Upper Darby Township, several terms as an elected official on his precinct election board as Judge and Inspector, in addition to service with various candidate and Democratic Party committees. Mr. Alberts brings to the Board a wealth of knowledge on matters related to ballot-access petitions, petition objections, and campaign-finance regulations at the local, state and federal levels. Mr. Lawrence, a member of the Board since 2004 and Chair since early 2020, was highly respected by officials from both political parties, having served most years as the minority-party member.
“On behalf of Council, I want to express our confidence in Ashley Lunkenheimer and fellow Board members John McBlain and Scott Alberts, who we trust to follow in Jerry Lawrence’s footsteps, providing bipartisan leadership to conduct fair and free elections for the voters of Delaware County,” said Delaware County Councilwoman Christine Reuther.

Delaware County Elected Officials Join CeaseFire PA Hold Press Conference in Support of Red Flag Law Legislation
Councilwoman Christine Reuther joined Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer, local elected officials and CeaseFirePA at a press conference at the steps of the Delaware County Courthouse on July 11 to call upon the PA Legislature to pass Extreme Risk Protection Orders, also known as Red Flag laws, to help reduce mass shootings, domestic violence, and firearm suicide.
Extreme Risk Protection Orders/Red Flag laws work by empowering family members and law enforcement to petition a judge to temporarily remove guns from a loved one in crisis, without subjecting them to an involuntary mental-health commitment. Many states have found massive reductions in suicides after enacting such legislation.
With the recent passage of the bipartisan Safer Communities Act, there is now $750 million in federal funding to states that enact ERPO/Red Flag Laws.
The crisis of gun violence impacts us all: Each week in Pennsylvania, 33 people are killed by guns. Pennsylvania now averages a mass shooting every 10 days. Women are five times more likely to be killed by an abusive partner if the abuser has access to a gun. Just 5% of suicide attempts are with a gun—but they are so deadly it still accounts for the lives of 900 Pennsylvanians.
Delaware County Council stands in support of this legislation that will save the lives of residents across Pennsylvania.

Reminder: Delaware County Seeking Volunteers to Develop Don Guanella Master Plan
Delaware County’s newest and largest County park will be located on the former Don Guanella site in Marple Township. The 213-acre park will be focused on the woodlands that now serve as one of the county’s largest forests.
Public input is a cornerstone of the project and will guide key elements of the plan. Delaware County is seeking fifteen community leaders to join the new Master Plan Advisory Committee for the former Don Guanella property. The master plan, to be completed in the Spring of 2023, will be the guiding document that identifies long-term conservation, woodland protection, infrastructure, and recreation improvements for the future county park.
The new committee is part of a public planning process that began earlier this year in order to engage the public in the planning process for the conservation and public use of the 213-acre property.
The committee will meet an estimated six to eight times with the consulting team and key stakeholders from Delaware County through March 2023. Members will provide information, ideas, and perspectives to help develop a plan for the new park.
Click below for more information on the Advisory Committee or to apply to serve as a member of the Advisory Committee. The deadline for submitting an applications is Friday, July 22.
