August 2024

Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings, Dr. Phillips Charities President and CEO Kenneth D. Robinson, and Maryah Sullivan, the 2014-2015 National Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of America, celebrate the 80th anniversary of The Boys and Girls Club of Central Florida by unveiling a mural featuring accomplished club alumni.

Greetings,

It’s hard to believe August is already upon us. Extreme heat indexes and soaring humidity have become regular occurrences, bringing a greater risk for heat-related illnesses. This summer, it’s important to be proactive by staying hydrated and avoiding the outdoors during the hottest parts of the day, if possible. Orange County has partnered with the library system, community centers and local homeless shelters to help residents stay cool while out and about in Orange County. You can find more heat safety tips in this month’s newsletter.

Heat Safety

Prolonged exposure to extreme heat increases your risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Stay safe and cool this summer with these tips:

  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing.
  • Schedule outdoor tasks for either earlier in the day or later in the day.
  • Hydrate with beverages that contain electrolytes.
  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher.

Be sure to take breaks indoors with air conditioning when possible. Residents can find relief at several cooling locations throughout the county, such as Orange County parks (with splash pads), community centers and libraries, all equipped with air conditioning or recreational water features.
