Digest

August 2025

Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings and District 1 Commissioner Nicole Wilson attend the grand opening of Bentonshire Park in Windermere.

Greetings,

It is hard to believe August is already here. With extreme heat and high humidity becoming more common, the risk of heat-related illnesses is rising. This summer, be proactive: stay hydrated and avoid being outdoors during the hottest parts of the day. Orange County is working with the library system, community centers and local homeless shelters to help residents stay cool. You will find more heat safety tips in this month’s newsletter.

Along with the summer heat, families are also preparing for the new school year. I encourage you to take advantage of Florida’s 2025 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, now through August 31. It is a great opportunity to save on school supplies clothing, and electronics.

Heat Safety

Prolonged exposure to extreme heat increases your risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Stay safe and cool this summer with these tips:

  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing.
  • Schedule outdoor tasks for either earlier or later in the day.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water and beverages that contain electrolytes.
  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher.

  • Be sure to take breaks indoors with air conditioning when possible.
