Baby Got Bat!

Did you know the lesser long-nosed bats might be coming off the endangered species list? The population has seen remarkable growth in the last 30 years - going from fewer than 1,000 bats to more than 200,000! With more than half of the North American species of bats listed as threatened or endangered, this would mark an incredible return and make them the first bat to achieve a delisting status. Curious to learn more about these nocturnal gliders? Build Your Bat Facts!

Mineral Madness Friday

Geology is rocking here this weekend so we thought we would highlight a mineral this Friday instead of a flower. This metallic marvel, Bismuthinite, is a mineral consisting of bismuth sulfide. The not so tenacious texture is soft enough to be scratched by a fingernail while overall remaining rather dense. This geometric-looking mineral was first discovered in 1832 in Potosi, Bolivia. You can find this beauty, along with hundreds of others, at our mineral sale this weekend.  Dig Deeper!

Volunteer Viernes

The Desert Museum is now enrolling for the next docent training class! If you're a life-time learner and eager to share your passion for the Sonoran Desert region, we'd love to talk to you about becoming one of our natural history interpreters. After attending a 15 week training course, docents graduate and become guides to the Museum's diverse collection of plants, animals and minerals. Docents enjoy the camaraderie they develop as part of a weekly team; it's like taking on another family.  Volunteer Today!
