Do You Rave About Rocks?

Are you mad about minerals? Our annual Mineral Madness event, held on January 13 & 14, is the perfect time to learn new things about minerals and rocks! It is a wonderful place to start a collection, with expert staff and docents to guide you. Back for a second year is Tales from the Vault, an exclusive behind the scenes tour of our mineral vault. You'll see more than 16,000 mineral and fossil specimens that many people have never seen before. Tours are $25/person. Rock On Out!

Packrats! What Are They Good For?

Absolutely everything! Did you know that packrats were some of the very first Sonoran Desert curators? Interested in what to do if you do happen to have a packrat home in your car engine, BBQ grill, or A/C unit? Our latest blog post answers both of those questions and more. Not only are these curious critters cute, they are vital to a healthy desert ecosystem. Their homes house other animals and they help aerate soil (their poop even helps fertilize the seeds).  Read The Blog!

Flower Friday

Oh, bring me some figgy pudding! The holidays are the perfect time to use this favorite fruit. Not only do fig trees (Ficus carica) have a pleasant scent, their large and luscious fruits are pleasing to the palate. The fig has been around since the dawn of civilization and was one of the first plants ever to be cultivated by humans. The plant is a deciduous tree, growing quickly to 12 feet tall (or taller) and produces edible figs in the fall and winter seasons.  Dig Deeper!

Volunteer Viernes

We love our volunteers! Next month is the Museum's annual Special Awards Ceremony where nominees of the Ironwood and Lifetime Achievement Awards will be honored. We will also recognize individuals who have volunteered 10,000, 15,000, and 20,000 hours or more. We have more than 500 people who volunteer their time and energy with us every year. We simply could not do what we do without them. Want to join our volunteer family?  Volunteer Today!
