Teacher Appreciation Night

Teachers and nature. What do they have in common? Both are educators and deserve to be honored! Do you know a teacher? If so, you should invite them to Teacher Appreciation Night (Cool Summer Nights) from 5-10 p.m. on August 17. Teachers receive free admission! To make things even better, we are talking about why Tucson was named a city of Gastronomy! Teachers will also receive 10% off in the gift store with their ID.

National Zookeeper Week

Last month we celebrated the amazing Desert Museum zookeeepers. Do you know the faces that keep our 230 animal species happy and healthy? Our zookeepers work in 100+ degree heat, clean up all different types of poop, and make sure our animals have the best lives. We have four different departments of keepers: Interpretative Animal Collection, Herpetology, Ichthyology, and Invertebrate Zoology, Mammalogy & Ornithology, and Raptor Free Flight. Thank Them Today!
Bat Night

Are you feeling batty? Join the Desert Museum for our last Cool Summer Nights (August 31) from 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. for Bat Night to learn more about these amazing aerial acrobats! Enjoy a tequila tasting, participate in bat-themed activities and art, find "Bat Girl," learn all about bats, snap a bat selfie, and more. Arizona residents: don't forget! It's only $16.95 for you to boogie with the bats. Opt Outside!

Flower Friday
Don't the flowers on this fishhook barrel cactus (Ferocactus wislizeni) remind you of a desert sunset? This species of barrel cactus is found in south-central Arizona and northern Sonora, Mexico. These cacti are often called the "Compass Barrel," because some of the larger plants lean towards the southwest.    These fiery flowers are also an extremely popular pollinator pad for native bees.  Dig Deeper!

Volunteer Viernes

We would like to congratulate our volunteers of the month for August: Joanne Kimura and JoAnn Hinchliffe.  Joanne Kimura is one of our dynamic Sunday docents. She absolutely loves interacting with guests on the grounds! The other JoAnn (Hinchliffe) volunteers as a Saturday docent. She loves leading the early morning bird walks during the summertime.  We could not do what we do without them. Thank you for being such a great addition to the family.
