Travel Guidance

Many of our community members are planning travel over the upcoming holiday season. With cases of COVID-19 once again rising across most of the country, and with seasonal influenza also on the rise, we urge increased attention to safety in the upcoming weeks. As you make your plans, we encourage you to review guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on how to protect yourself and others when you travel.

Holidays and celebrations are often a time to gather with family and friends. However, they can also be risky for COVID-19 exposure if you are in close proximity to those with whom you do not normally live, especially if they are unvaccinated. Here are some tips for safe celebrations and gatherings:

  • Have conversations ahead of time to understand expectations of celebrating together.
  • Do not attend if you have any COVID-19 symptoms or have been recently exposed to the virus, and ask the same of others. Have outdoor celebrations if possible.
  • If celebrating indoors in a group, and if not actively eating and drinking, wear a mask. If weather permits, open windows to allow fresh air.
  • Wear a high-quality mask on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation when traveling in the US or abroad, as required.
  • Following your travel, please be aware of testing and quarantine requirements and recommendations.

If you are fully vaccinated:

Following domestic travel

  • Travel quarantine is not required; however, you are advised to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days after travel.
  • If you develop symptoms or test positive, please self-isolate and inform your supervisor and Occupational Health.
  • Following international travel
  • A COVID-19 test is required at your departure location. You are required to test again 3-5 days upon your return and self-monitor for symptoms for 14 days after that.
  • Travel quarantine is not required.

If you have an exemption to the MFA vaccine requirement and are unvaccinated and travel anywhere outside of DC, Maryland or Virginia:

  • You must follow the protocol for travel quarantine.
  • Upon returning to the District, per D.C. Health guidance, you must self-quarantine for 7 days after returning home (even if you test negative).
  • If no test is done, you must self-quarantine for 10 days after returning home.

As a reminder, if you are NOT vaccinated and travel outside of the DMV for non-essential reasons, you must take PTO or unpaid leave until you are cleared from quarantine.

Thank you for your continued cooperation, and we wish you safe travels.
