A Message from Leadership

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Montgomery Women's leadership newsletter! We are solidly into our new program and Board term, and we bring you this communication to provide added value in your connection with us. In each issue we'll update you on our direction as an organization, inform you of our upcoming member-specific and open-to-all programs we host, highlight our members, and share leadership tips you can use right away in your professions, careers, organizations, and businesses.

Our mission and focus are advancing women in Montgomery County MD who aspire to and are in leadership positions in political, business, nonprofit, educational, civic, and governmental sectors. This newsletter is one way in which we will champion our mission and serve you.

As incoming President, I proposed a "Focused Four" direction to guide us in our decisions and programs, and your Board concurs with these. They are, (1) member engagement (through networking, participation on committees, and volunteers in leadership roles); (2) equity engrained in all that we say and do; (3) visibility and recognition of Montgomery Women throughout the county and beyond as THE organization for women + leadership, and (4) membership growth and diversity. We invite you to participate with us, join us if you're not already a member, and encourage your circles of women leaders to do the same. Until our next issue.

Yours in leadership service,

Sylvia Henderson

President, Montgomery Women

Quick Tips

For the Everyday Leader

Leadership is a practice that can be learned and developed by stepping into an opportunity and stepping up to lead. Key behaviors and attitudes that enable you to earn followers and lead effectively include (1) integrity, (2) honesty, (3) courage, (4) commitment, (5) passion, (6) determination, (7) compassion, and (8) sensitivity. People are drawn to leaders who exhibit strength and can inspire belief in others.

Much of leadership is more about serving than directing. Leaders, of course, need to be able to make tough decisions when required, but most importantly they should concentrate on enabling their team to thrive. This is a 'serving' role, not the dominant 'leading' role commonly associated with leadership.
