Hello Ken,

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind as we navigate both natural and manufactured disasters. I am grateful for our educators who work to ensure schools remain places of learning and safety. Let's offer each other a bit of grace during these turbulent times.

Here are the updates:

  • February Board meeting: Monday, February 3 at 2:30 pm. The work session includes a review of the District's academic strategy, a financial report, and a progress monitoring update on postsecondary preparation. The complete agenda is here.
  • APS outperforms peers in national reading assessment: While significant gaps remain, the District’s gains in reading was greater than the state of Georgia, other large urban school districts, and public schools nationally which significantly declined. More here.
  • Budget hearing to opt out of HB 581: The first hearing is Monday, Feb 3 at 10 am. More info about the Board decision to preserve long-term district funding is here.
  • Response to the evolving national immigration policy: All students have a constitutional right to education ‘regardless of immigration or citizenship status’. Read more here.
  • Congratulation to Tolton Pace, newly appointed APS Board Member: Totlon Pace was appointed from a competitive pool of applicants to serve out the remainder of Eshe Collins' term.

Hearing from Students over Breakfast

Board members meet with students at each high school over the course of the year. At Maynard Jackson HS I heard about the culture challenges between IB/non-IB students, discipline improvements, and opportunities to expand bathroom accessibility. I look forward to meeting with students from Midtown HS (March 11) and N Atlanta HS (March 20).
