YOUR WEEKLY NEWS & UPDATES
DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
Its official: we've hit that "half way" point through the summer. The Fourth of July is behind us. Labor Day and winter feel imminent. For now, its just getting through these hot, sticky days. As usual, we have what you need for that (wine, beer, and booze). Fun fact: the phrase "dog days" of summer have nothing to do with dogs panting on hot pavement. Its a reference to the star Sirius' rising.
Off The Beaten Path: Gin From Unexpected Places

Drinking beyond London Dry: we all get into our ruts and rituals that can be hard to break out of. Tanqueray, Hendrick's, Bombay - absolutely nothing wrong with the old faithfuls. But, hey. Its a big world full of gin. Some of our unique favorites on the shelf right now:

Destilerias Xoriguer Mahon Gin : This gin hails from one of the few places in the world to claim a protected designation of origin for gin. The British once held an outpost here, establishing a long tradition of gin making and drinking. This is wine-based distillate, flavored with juniper gathered wild in the mountains around the island. This is truly an extraordinary gin.

Principe de los Apostoles Mate Argentina Gin : While the gin is distilled in Mendoza, the botanicals come from Misiones, including peppermint, eucalyptus, and yerba mate, capturing the spirit of Argentina very well indeed.

Drumshanbo Gumpowder Irish Gin : This one is a mix or oriental botanicals and gunpowder tea, distilled at The Shed Distillery in Co Leitrim, Ireland. The addition of gunpowder tea gives this gin a completely unique flavor profile - super refreshing in gin and tonic on a hot day.

Suntory Roku Japanese Gin : This gin features the usual gin botanicals - juniper and so on, but with six uniquely Japanese seasonal additions. Sakura leaf and flower for spring, sencha and gyokuro tea for summer, sancho pepper for autumn, and yuzu peel to represent winter.

Cadenhead Old Raj Scottish Gin : Cadenhead is Scotland's oldest independent bottler. Best known for their whisky and rum, but this gin has been an important part of the portfolio since 1972. This is gin that isn't the least bit shy about being gin - juniper heavy, with seville orange peel, coriander, licorice, angelica root, orris and saffron added post-distillation.

Staff Picks
Patti's Pick

2015 Thierry et Pascal Matrot Bourgogne Rouge - $35.99

We all know that enjoying some good Burgundy can cost a small fortune. Fortunately, there's a lot of value to be found in a great producer's basic Bourgogne bottlings. Matrot's bottling makes a very strong case for that statement. Tart red cherries, bits of earth and spice - this is proof you can scratch that Burgundy itch for under $100.
Doug's Pick

2017 Lagar d Cervera Albarino, $21.99

This is La Rioja Alta's Galician project and just like they execute Riojas at a high level, this Albarino from the Rias Baixas will not disappoint. It has the orange blossom and peach notes that you'd expect from Albarino as well as the high acidity. This is a refreshing, bright, and thirst quenching bottle perfect for the hot days of summer.
Madison's Pick

2016 Birichino, St Georges Pinot Noir, Central Coast - $29.99

I have yet to taste anything from bad from Birichino. This pinot noir, like all of Birichino's wine, is fresh, refined, and immediately delicous. This is unmistakably pinot noir.. full of pure red fruit, a touch of earth, and elegant florality, light in the glass with a long finish. Birichino sources from old vineyards that are carefully farmed and family owned - in the winery, its all about minimal intervention and ultimate varietal expression. I somehow had this bottle open for 3 days, and I can honestly say it was still tasting excellent on day 3.
Patrick's Pick

2018 Domaine de Pouy, Cotes de Gascogne - $12.99

A blend of Ugni Blanc (the Italian Trebbiano) and Colombard from only the best vineyards in the Bas-Armagnac region of Southwesten France, this is a crisp and vibrant white wine, perfect for a summer dinner on the patio.
Redolent of heady green apple, lime, and tangerine zest, the Grassa family ensures that the fruit stays clean and bright from cold fermentation while being more complex than a one note wine from a balanced level of flinty minerality and a 3 month aging on the Lees.
Match with grilled sea bass and summer vegetables!
