Dorchester Health Dept. Hosted Maryland Walks Day in Cambridge
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Communities across the state of Maryland are getting ready to lace up their sneakers this Wednesday for Maryland Walks Day.
Local health departments are encouraging people to come together and walk through their communities .The goal is reaching one million steps across the state in the month of October.
And in the City of Cambridge, the Dorchester County Health Department is working with local businesses to get people walking downtown.
“But we’re also trying to involve the businesses downtown and Cambridge and get, the walkers in the doors at the businesses. So we went door to door yesterday and try to get the businesses to offer discounts.. And we did get some takers…” says Dorchester County Health Department Advisor, Robin Stanley.
Walking is the state of Maryland’s official exercise, and the state wants to celebrate all the health and environmental benefits that come with getting your steps in.

Local chief reflects on Indigenous Peoples’ Day
While not an official federal holiday, 17 states and Washington D.C. observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day either in place of or in addition to Columbus Day.
“I’m proud to honor the Indigenous communities who have helped shape Maryland, from Mountain Maryland to the Eastern Shore,” wrote Maryland Governor Wes Moore on a Facebook post on Monday. “Their history, culture, and leadership continue to influence and strengthen our communities every day.”
In Maryland, the fourth Friday of November, marks American Indian Heritage Day. But for many in Native communities, the second Monday in October marks a special milestone and a success for the indigenous community.
“For me and us … it’s another success in the indigenous communities,” Nause-Waiwash Chief Donna “Wolf Mother” Abbott. “Anytime that the government and other communities acknowledge the existence of indigenous peoples past and present, it’s a huge accomplishment for us. It’s also another chance to tell our story with the most current and accurate information that has come to light, because there’s always new information being discovered.”
Abbott recommends that people use the day to learn about local Indigenous histories wherever they live.

Trot or Treat Parade
Positive Strides Center, a nonprofit therapeutic horseback riding program in Preston, is hosting "Trot or Treat", a free Halloween community event for families, on Saturday, October 24. We would be grateful if you would share it with your readers, viewers and listeners.
The event opens with a parade of costumed horses. Guests can then play games, paint a horse, take a photo in our horse photo booth and collect treats. Positive Strides will have an information booth with a donation box for anyone who would like to support our riders.
For photographers and videographers, the opening parade is the best moment to capture, and we would be glad to arrange a short interview with our staff or a rider's family. Our website has more details at positivestridescenter.org.
