Pillion…
I didn’t even know what that word meant most of my life. It means a seat for a passenger behind a motorcyclist. Wow, this opens discussion we could go on for hours!
Many motorcyclists want his or her special person with them when they are riding. Most times they are a passenger or riding pillion and that can be a very special and rewarding experience. Unfortunately, young guys have ruined countless women from ever riding a motorcycle again because as soon as she is onboard, the guy’s testosterone goes ballistic, and he feels the need to prove his manhood by popping wheelies or riding high speed quarter mile jaunts. Then she gets off the bike after being terrified and says, “I’ll never get on one of those again!” That is so sad.
Two-up riding is incredible fun and can give great lifetime memories. I have often said if you can keep your special one safe and comfortable all while having fun, you will ride a lot more! It’s not rocket science, just get them proper comfortable, protective gear, a comfortable seat, and ride safely and properly.
Story time…. I had just bought my 1977 Goldwing and was so proud of it. I took my wife on a ride from the dealership to show it off to her family. They all came out in time to see me spin out and toss us both over the high side. It had been raining and I just lost it within 20 feet of the whole group as we were leaving. I broke my collar bone, and she broke her shoulder! I’m just saying that you have to always be on guard, and you never know when the crap can happen. She went on to ride tens of thousands of miles on the back of my bike with no problems while creating lifetime memories.
Carrying a passenger makes your bike more top heavy and actually a bit more difficult to ride. That’s not bad it just means you have to adjust your riding style for the extra weight. If you do this and pay attention to the different way you need to ride you will have a wonderful time! Cyndy rides her own bike and is by my side when we go places on our motorcycles. We have such a great time, but I must admit I do like it so much when she rides on the bike with me. And you might not believe it, but I have ridden on the back of her bike too!
