The Start-down Sequence
So far this year, our newsletters have addressed the importance of a good turn in the golf swing. In January and February I highlighted the set-up; last month featured the start-up of the motion and how to coil in the backswing all the way to the top.
Now it is time to sequence the downswing using...
Last month I asked you to give yourself a hug as a way to demonstrate the build-up of energy from the torso. This month, move from the hug to a criss-cross of the arms and begin to sequence the downswing.
Picture 1 - At the top of the backswing, begin with a lateral movement of pressure from your right foot to the left BEFORE any unwinding of the trunk. To prevent excessive swaying of the lower body, keep the right heel down as the shoulders begin to tilt after the lateral.
Picture 2 - The Start-Down Once the pressure moves from trail foot to lead foot, the upper trunk begins tilting. The lead shoulder begins moving away from the chin toward the lead ear as the trailing shoulder begins its tilt towards the ball. ** The shoulders are unwinding at right angles to the spine as they did in the backswing windup.**
Picture 3-The Athletic Finish The right shoulder finishes lower than the left! The spine angle remains the same and the unwinding of the trunk pulls the right heel off the ground to a balanced finish.
Next month, 3 great exercises to compliment the all important year of the Turn!
Remember, "Lateral then Spin!"
