Sarasota Police Department Crime Update

At the May 5, 2025, Downtown Improvement District (DID) meeting, Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche presented the department’s 2024 End of Year Review. The presentation highlighted significant progress in public safety and is available to view at

https://sarasota.granicus.com/player/clip/12576?view_id=99&redirect=true

Crime is on the decline in the City of Sarasota, and the numbers speak for themselves. Under the leadership of Chief Rex Troche, the Sarasota Police Department (SPD) has achieved a historic milestone—reporting a 21.8% drop in total index offenses in 2024. This marks the largest single-year crime rate decrease in SPD's recorded history, following a notable 16.2% decrease in 2023.

These results reflect a continued commitment to community policing, proactive safety measures, and strategic crime prevention efforts. The SPD’s dedication is helping make Sarasota a safer place to live, work, and visit.

Parking: Gateless Garages Coming June 17

Heads up! All three of the City’s parking garages – Palm Avenue, State Street, St. Armands – will go gateless beginning Tuesday, June 17!

This change was made with two goals in mind: improve traffic flow in some of the city’s busiest areas and make parking easier through modern technology.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • On June 17, the entrance and exit gates in the City’s three parking garages will temporarily be in an upright position until they are removed.
  • Each car will need to pay within 15 minutes of entering the garage through a physical pay station, mobile app (PassportParkMobile) or text-to-pay.
  • Parking rates will remain the same: First hour is free, second hour is $2, third hour and beyond is $1 per hour. Event parking is a flat $5 fee with credit cards and coins (no dollar bills) accepted
  • Reminder: Parking is free in City garages on Sundays and City observed holidays.

Also, garage parking enforcement hours will be extended from 7:30 a.m. until each garage closes. Hours of operation for each garage are:

  • Palm Avenue and State Street:
  • Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. to midnight
  • Friday – Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.
  • St. Armands:
  • Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Friday – Saturday, 8 a.m. to midnight

More information will be shared in the weeks leading to the launch on June 17. In the meantime, reach out to the Parking Department with any

questions by e-mailing ParkingInfo@sarasotafl.gov.

Neighbors by Ring

Just in time for hurricane season, the City has another way to communicate with residents: Neighbors by Ring.

Neighbors is a social networking platform affiliated with Ring doorbells and security cameras. It’s a standalone mobile app and available to anyone -- whether or not you’re a Ring customer.

The City’s Communications Office plans to use Neighbors as a supplemental outreach tool to connect with more residents, particularly during an emergency situation. The Communications team recently worked with Ring to create a verified account, which was launched last week during Hurricane Preparedness Week.

Neighbors is available within the Ring app. It also can be downloaded at no cost via the Apple Store or Google Play.

Stay connected with the City of Sarasota through City News and social media (Facebook, Instagam, XNextdoor and Neighbors).

Hurricane Prepardness

As hurricane season kicks off on June 1, it's crucial for Sarasota's downtown businesses and organizations to be well-prepared. The Ready Business Hurricane Toolkit from FEMA offers a comprehensive guide to help you assess risks, develop a preparedness plan, and ensure business continuity during and after a storm. This toolkit provides step-by-step instructions on safeguarding your staff, surroundings, systems, and services, which is vital considering that 75% of businesses without a continuity plan fail within three years of a disaster.By proactively planning, you not only protect your employees and customers but also contribute to the resilience of our entire downtown community.
