August's Downtown Business Spotlight of the Month is Jodi's, located at 86 Commerce Street in Downtown Hawkinsville. Jodi Goss Watson, the owner of Jodi's, was born and raised in Hawkinsville, Georgia. She first fell in love with retail when she worked weekends and holidays at her grandmother's store, The Mailbox. After graduating high school, Mrs. Watson decided to follow in her grandmother's footsteps and become a business owner by opening a florist and bridal registry shop in Downtown Hawkinsville. Mrs. Watson always enjoyed being a florist but realized that home décor and clothing were her true passions.
In 1991, Mrs. Watson opened Jodi's, at its current location at 86 Commerce Street. She chose Downtown Hawkinsville to start her business, because she couldn't think of a better place to open a business than in the heart of her hometown. Jodi's is a clothing boutique that sells men's, women's, and children's apparel, as well as jewelry, accessories, home décor, and shoes. Jodi's also offers embroidery services and a bridal registry.
This year celebrates 30 years of Jodi's being open. Mrs. Watson attributes her success to her customers, hard work, and dedication. Mrs. Watson said "being a business owner is hard work. It's not an 8 to 5 job. There are no off days, but if you work hard and stay committed you will be successful at anything you do. " She also added that there are some perks of being a business owner, like flexibility. Mrs. Watson mentioned that family is very important to her and being a business owner allowed her to be a part of her son, John Eric's, big and little milestones. Although there are many perks of being a business owner, Mrs. Watson's favorite part about her job is her customers. She loves meeting new people and helping them find the perfect gift or outfit.
The Economic Development & Main Street Office would like to personally congratulate Jodi's for 30 years of commitment to Downtown Hawkinsville. We are so glad to call her a downtown business and can't wait to see all that she will accomplish. Congratulations on being Downtown's Business Spotlight of the Month!

STATE INCOME TAX CREDITS AVAILABLE FOR HISTORIC PROPERTIES THAT ARE REHABILITATED | |
Did you know about the Georgia State Income Tax Credit Program for Rehabilitated Historic Property? If your property is considered a historic property, you could be eligible for state income tax incentives for rehabilitating your building. A state income tax credit of 25% is available for rehabilitation costs. The credit is capped at $100,000 for residences and $300,000 for income producing properties. This amended tax credit is allowed for the taxable year in which the certified rehabilitation is completed.
In order to apply for the Georgia State Income Tax Credit program, the Georgia Historic Preservation Division will need several items to review your project. This includes the application form, photographs of the entire property, inside and out, a photo key (copy of a floor plan keyed to show where photos were taken), and the rehab floor plan of the building. For more information on this tax incentive and others, please contact Hawkinsville-Pulaski's Economic Development Department at 478-208-0805 or visit the link provided below.
