"In Good Company" To Debut On D.A.N.

In his seven years as Allegheny County Executive Director, Rich Fitzgerald has continued to focus on growth of the community. County Executive Fitzgerald has increased public transit, improved Allegheny parks, and implemented higher economic development standards. In his partnership with the DowntownCDC, the County Executive will host "In Good Company" a show that will not only highlight Downtown but other communities in Allegheny County.

Filmed at Molinaro Ristorante and Bar as a luncheon discussion, the show will feature the County Executive and guests. Guests will vary from politicians and businesspeople to community organizers and other stakeholders. Each monthly show will focus on different aspects of Allegheny County happenings, current events, and concerns. "The goal of the show is to strengthen the community" says John Valentine, Executive Director of the DowntownCDC; "the show is for citizens who want to make informed decisions for the benefit of the city and county."

The first show, set to air in mid February, will feature Craig Davis of Visit Pittsburgh and Kevin McMahon of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Each show will be available on downtowncdc.org, youtube.com, and other affiliated websites.

The Only Non-Profit Theater In Pittsburgh Dedicated To Comedy

Located at 943 Liberty Avenue, Arcade Comedy Theater is the only non-profit theater in Pittsburgh dedicated to comedy, as well as the only comedy theater located within the Downtown area. The comedy theater features a group of monthly shows that range from game shows to improv and stand up.

Opened in February 2013, Arcade Comedy Theater was founded by a group of creative minded friends that had a vision to bring comedy to Pittsburgh.

The mission of Arcade Comedy Theater is to continue to elevate and advance the art of comedy, especially in Pittsburgh. Director of Operations Jason Clark explains that "comedy is an art form. Most people generally do not think of it that way, but it is important for people to understand that. We are giving people an opportunity to express themselves through comedy, and that in itself is a valuable form of art."

Arcade Comedy Theater incorporates different aspects of comedy in all the shows they offer. One of their top selling shows is "Knights of the Arcade," a dungeons and dragons live show. The comedy theater also has many different house teams that perform on a rotating basis each month.

All the shows at Arcade Comedy Theater are great, but Clark suggests if you're looking for a show to see for your first time "Dinner with the Nolans" is a great option. "Kristy and Jethro Nolan are fantastic and seeing their show will definitely make you want to come back for more" said Clark.

Penny Arcade is also one of the popular shows at the comedy theater and it is specifically geared towards children. The show is fully interactive and the children get to essentially create the show through suggestions that the actors will use to improvise with. "Penny Arcade is special because it is a pay as you wish show. We want to make comedy available to as many people as possible and this is just one way we can do that" explained Clark.

During the week, Arcade Comedy Theater turns into a designated learning space where they offer classes in improv, sketch writing, and stand-up comedy. They have many different levels of classes, but everyone starts with 101 course and works up through their unique philosophy.

"Simply" Greek For Fresh and Authentic Food

For nearly 4 years, The Simple Greek restaurant has sat nestled in the corner of Market Square, surrounded by a host of dining options for hungry Downtown residents. Since opening in March of 2015, owner Sasha Machel and her employees have watched the business grow and steadily build a fanbase.

"Our customers are great," says Machel, "I'm trying to find out who everyone is by name. We see the same faces coming back more and more, and they recognize us." Machel joined the business in 2015 with her father, who founded My Big Fat Greek Gyro in 2012. Together they work to provide a friendly, welcoming atmosphere that keep customers coming back - along with the delicious food, of course.

The Simple Greek menu utilizes fresh, simple ingredients while maintaining a speedy, made-to-order service. "It's our way of showing timeless flavors and healthy options in this quick-service restaurant craze you see nowadays," says Machel. Customers can choose from an array of flavorful options - including freshly-grilled meats, veggies, and authentic sauces - to build their own pita or bowl. The experience provides a taste of authentic Greek with plenty of variety. "You can mix and match what you get, and a lot of it you won't have to feel bad about eating afterwards" ... "the food speaks for itself."

Indeed, the customer response to The Simple Greek has been overwhelmingly positive. In the past year, the restaurant has implemented a successful catering program while enjoying more and more foot traffic at their Market Square location. Outside of the area, other locations are enjoying similar success. "...As a brand and as a franchise, [The Simple Greek] is coming along well," says Machel, "It's been really cool to see this thing take flight."

For those who have yet to try The Simple Greek, the restaurant is open from 11am to 8pm Monday through Thursday, and 11am to 9pm Friday and Saturday.
