Shamrock'd Located in Market Square This Weekend

Pittsburgh is a city of many faces. It truly encapsulates a full spectrum of interests and activities that everyone can enjoy. Nobody knows the face of a constantly moving city more than Mike McCoy, one of the partners who owns Shamrock'd, a St. Patrick's Day themed pop-up bar located in Market Square.

The process for selecting a holiday to celebrate with the pop-up is quite easy: what do people like to celebrate? It is a bar, so some of the big drinking holidays are an inspiration. But extending beyond the choice of what to celebrate comes the question of who to celebrate. McCoy and his partners initially took a trip down to New Orleans to study the Irish Bar Scene. Then, they used that knowledge to come back and set up Downtown Pittsburgh's only Irish-themed bar. McCoy and his partners drew inspiration for Shamrock'd from legendary irish band The Popes-- all the drink names are named after songs of theirs. This isn't the first time the Pop-Up bar, which resides in the same space as the Original Oyster House, has found inspiration from the past. The drinks for the Halloween bar were all named after George A. Romero's Pittsburgh classic, Night of the Living Dead. These fun twists on classic drinks change with each season: the alcohol, name, and decor that changes holiday to holiday.

With beer on tap and Frozen Irish Coffee, Shamrock'd also has live music on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, where local Pittsburgh bands play Irish music. This lets patrons gain exposure to new, local bands and also allows the bands to gain a greater fan base. All in all, it adds a new level of ambience to the bar that make it a neighborhood pub right here in Market Square. There are currently no Irish bars in Downtown, so placing the bar in Market Square gives it that convenience factor since Market Square is already a destination for Downtown Pittsburgh.
Shamrock'd is open from 4 p.m. to midnight on Wednesdays through Saturday.

VisitPITTSBURGH's International Marketing Collaborative

Thanks to new international direct flights and a collaboration with the Pittsburgh International Airport, VisitPITTSBURGH is back into international marketing again for the first time in more than ten years. To help raise awareness of Pittsburgh and to drive international visitation in the U.K. and Germany where there are now direct flights to Pittsburgh, the International Marketing Collaborative was created in 2017.

Original members of the collaborative included the Pittsburgh International Airport, Visit Butler, Visit Washington County, VisitPITTSBURGH and the Idea Foundry. Visit Monroeville and the Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau recently joined the collaborative. The group is also utilizing the services of two international public relations and marketing firms based out of the U.K. and Germany.

The collaborative project focuses its marketing efforts on cities and countries that have direct flights from Pittsburgh International Airport. The group is essentially identifying the channels and mediums that will best promote Pittsburgh to new audiences of travelers. This push will drive visitation and create a positive impact on our local economy. Overall, the collaborative is a win-win situation for everyone involved; and, with the inaugural British Airways direct flight from Heathrow Airport to Pittsburgh, the wins keep coming for Pittsburgh.

"Our international marketing efforts and the new direct flights are the result of the outstanding work being done by our partners at the Pittsburgh International Airport," said Tom Loftus, chief marketing officer for VisitPITTSBURGH. "They are helping us bring the world to Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh to the world."

These advances haven't gone unnoticed. National Geographic Traveller , a U.K. based publication, named Pittsburgh one of the coolest places to visit in 2019. If that wasn't already amazing enough, Pittsburgh was the only U.S. city to make the list.

VisitPITTSBURGH staff members, along with representatives from their partner organizations, attend international trade shows as another avenue for promoting Pittsburgh.

Due to increased interest surrounding Pittsburgh, in 2018, VisitPITTSBURGH's Marketing department hosted 19 international writers which produced 350 positive articles on the region and $7.6 million in advertising equivalency. And, the Convention Sales department hosted nine tour operators from the U.K. and Germany.

The benefits of all these organizations working together are huge for Downtown Pittsburgh. Visitors who travel to Pittsburgh want to take in all that we have to offer. They want to stay in our Downtown hotels, explore the Cultural District and eat/drink at our amazing restaurants and bars. Our local businesses want the same thing, and this collaborative is taking Pittsburgh one step closer to making that dream a reality.

Andy Warhol, An Eccentric Cultural Phenomenon

The Andy Warhol Museum has been a staple of Pittsburgh culture since it opened in 1994 on the North Shore-- just over the bridge from Downtown. The museum shows off Andy Warhol in his entirety, which includes his younger days before he rose to prominence. The museum depicts Warhol as a real person, rather than the eccentric cultural phenomenon we we all know and love. The stories the museum tells go beyond just Warhol's story to speak about Pittsburgh as a cultural hub and about a family of immigrants. Director Patrick Moore wrote in an email, "people come to learn about a famous person named Andy Warhol who they associate with Studio 54 and end up finding a much richer story."

The museum sits just minutes from Downtown and provides one of the greatest tourist attractions in the city. It serves as one of the first things out-of-towners do when they get here, bringing tourists and locals alike to learn about so much more than the initial Warhol they are familiar with. The intrigue of Warhol's art also ushers in a wave of younger museum goers who bring new ideas and new life to one of Pittsburgh's most recognizable institutions and the city as a whole. This has made the North Shore a more welcoming community, helping to shift Pittsburgh towards the better.

The museum also brings in young, sometimes local, artists to showcase their talents, which is just another way the museum connects with our community, making it a truly Pittsburgh experience. The current exhibition, which will be on display through March, features 29 year-old Pittsburgh-based painter Devan Shimoyama and titled Cry, Baby. Then, opening in fall of 2019, is a new exhibit to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the museum titled Andy Warhol: Revelation, which Moore says "will be the first exhibition to comprehensively examine the role of catholicism in Warhol's life and work." The museum works to change the exhibits in the permanent collection as well, keeping it fresh and relevant while still staying true to their roots as a Pittsburgh cultural icon.

Downtown Resident's Insight Of The City

Since 2008, Ronda Zegarelli has resided in and worked in Downtown. She prefers it to living anywhere else in the city. One of the amenities that she loves is the accessibility of cultural events, like the Benedum Performing Arts Center, Heinz Hall, and the August Wilson Center, which she credits as having "really well-curated programming". Having "the arts at your fingertips," as Zegarelli puts it, is a major benefit of her location, although she does admit there could be more music venues.

Co-share workspaces are a highlight of the new businesses opening Downtown. Zegarelli regularly uses one down the street from her home to get her job without having to drive. "I can literally walk from my condo, two blocks away is my office, and then I can go to lunch at Market Street Grocery...and after work catch up with my husband while having a cocktail," she explains. So far, the Golden Triangle contains seven co-working spaces where residents can rent out individual offices and take advantages of various amenities. For example, Novel Coworking on Liberty Avenue provides an espresso bar, complimentary internet connection, and local beers on draft, so workers who would otherwise station themselves at their homes or a library can feel empowered to get things done in a fun environment. In a job market with increasing numbers of freelancers and teleworkers, these spaces will only grow and attract more members Downtown.

Zegarelli observes that it may not be the best place to drive a car, but the type of people she sees moving Downtown (generally young professionals) don't mind. She remarks that "having vehicles isn't important to young people. They can grab an Uber but they can also walk around Downtown." There is no real necessity for much more than a bicycle, which is also becoming an easier mode of transportation as the number of bike lanes increases.
