Drakensberg Mountains Excursion

DAY 1 Arrive at Luxury Drakensberg Mountain Lodge

Arrive at Lodge midday. The Lodge consists of a large and beautifully thatched main building with award winning dining, wine bar, and terrace overlooking the mountains. The tastefully decorated, individual suites are among the most luxurious in the Northern Drakensberg. Our Garden Suite has a comfortable bedroom with luxury en-suite bathroom, a lounge with a gas operated fire place, and private patio. DAY 2 Afternoon AmaZizi Tribal Area Tour Experience the real life of rural South Africa. We will be hosted by a lodge staff member on a visit to the local AmaZizi village. We will meet a Sangoma (traditional healer), visit the primary school, and if he is home, we'll pop in to see the resident artist who lives in half an aeroplane that he made out of scrap metal. We will also shop the local craft market.

After Dinner Full Moon Experience There's nothing quite like a full moonlit night in the Drakensberg, and we will enjoy the Full Moon Experience! This includes a farm to table meal with renowned South African wines in the lodge, and an after dinner night hike to the dam for Amarula Coffee (a traditional South African delicacy) by the fire. We'll listen to Fiery Necked Night Jars (birds) and the world-renowned Drakensberg Frogs Choir!

DAY 3 Overnight Trail Ride Excursion

A full day of riding with 6-8 hours in the saddle includes a break for lunch at a beauty-spot where we, and our horses, can enjoy a well-deserved reprieve at the river. The trails wind their way over the vast plains of the Little Berg, and up steep ridges where breath-taking views abound. A visit to Cannibal Cave to view ancient drawings will be incorporated. Our guide will educate us on the rich history of the area and its people along our journey. We'll be traveling to and staying in a remote but very comfortable mountain retreat. A personal concierge will greet us and ensure that our every need is met. There will be no electricity, but the food and wine offerings are superb and the in room fireplace and hot water bottles at the foot of our beds will keep us cozy all night.

DAY 4 Final Ride to Mountain Lodge, Return to Camp There will be a half day ride back to the Lodge where we will have lunch. We'll be collected to return to Camp with a local grocery shopping experience en route. Haggling with the butcher is always an interesting experience! As usual, Chef Paul will serve a delectable dinner and it will be business as usual around the fire with the rest of our group. I am sure we'll have some tall tales to tell after our riding adventure!

DAY 5 Spa Day and Drakensberg Boys Choir Performance We'll enjoy a day of pampering and culture, starting with a half day of spa services of your choosing, followed by lunch at the renowned Drakensberg Sun Resort. Package is $1600 per person. All chauffeured road transfers, accommodations, meals and drinks, luggage transfers, performances, and gratuities are covered in this itinerary. Horseback excursion includes horses, guide, and appropriate riding safety gear. Spa services and boutique shopping will be the responsibility of the client.
