A Note from Father Sam

Alleluia! Christ is Risen!

Dear friends,

Every year on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, we celebrate Jesus the Good Shepherd. In John 10, Jesus repeatedly refers to himself in phrases like this: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep…The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me.”

For some, the image of the “good shepherd” evokes bucolic images of sunny pastures and fluffy sheep. A fairy tale, really. But we know that life, in reality, is far from this verdant scene. Jesus calls himself the good shepherd not because life is a storybook, but because life is hard. Because like sheep, we can get lost or hurt. Like sheep in a flock, we grow tired, and sick. To say that Jesus is our shepherd is not to say that nothing bad will ever happen to us, but rather, that when we get lost, there is One who knows us, who loves us, who cares for us enough to go and search for us. To find us in the midst of our pain, to know us and love us more deeply than we can imagine, and right there to lead us into his good pastures.

Whatever you are facing right now, I pray that you may know the presence of the Good Shepherd. God is faithful. Christ is risen. You are not alone.

The Lord is my shepherd; *

I shall not be in want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures *

and leads me beside still waters.

He revives my soul *

and guides me along right pathways for his Name's sake.

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I shall fear no evil; *

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; *

you have anointed my head with oil,

and my cup is running over.

Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, *

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Faithfully,

Father Sam

Guest Preacher on Sunday

This Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Easter, is Good Shepherd Sunday. Each year, we hear a different part of the tenth chapter of John, where Jesus calls himself the “Good Shepherd.” On Sunday, we will welcome a guest preacher: the Reverend Canon Greg Baker of Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis. Canon Greg was raised and ordained not far from here in the Diocese of New Hampshire, and trained for ministry alongside Father Sam at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. Welcome, Greg!

New Copies of Forward Day by Day Available

New copies of Forward Day by Day are available in the back of the church for you to take home. Forward Day by Day is a daily devotional that includes scripture readings, prayers, and a reflection written by a fellow disciple. If you are looking for a daily prayer practice, this is a great place to start! The publication is quarterly, so the new copies will take you through July.
