September 27, 2020 | This Week at Christ Church
A Note From Your Rector
Dear Christ Church Family and Friends:

This Sunday, September 27, I will be presiding but our Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev. Michael Curry will be preaching!!! This is HUGE. He is the national head of the Episcopal Church. He is also the person who preached at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle so I suspect it will be really good. This would be a great Sunday to invite your friends, family and neighbors to join us for church. They can stay in their pjs, sip a cup of coffee, and Zoom in from their couch. It has never been easier!
Last weekend, our fellowship/special events committee organized our first in person event at Church -- a Drive-In Movie Night - featuring Zootopia. Thank you Carl Cheney, Sherry Lund, Lenore and Paul Lovoi, and Carol Wentworth! It was so fantastic that we are looking for an angel to underwrite buying the equipment for the church. If we use it 2.5 times it pays for itself. We anticipate using this in a variety of ways during the pandemic, and imagine our Youth Group using it to host Drive-In fundraisers long into the future past the pandemic.
We will have our first Youth Group Meeting on Friday, October 2 from 4 to 5 p.m. All junior high and senior high school age persons are welcome. However you must:

1. RSVP to Mother Beth by email [email protected]
2.Wear a mask
3.Socially Distance

St. Peter's of Redwood City and possibly St. Bede's have expressed interest in eventually joining us. If there is enough interest we will divide into a high school group and a junior high school group.

Following the Sunday service on October 3, you are invited to the church parking lot starting at 10:30 a.m. for a drive-through blessing of the animals. All creatures are welcome, including stuffed ones! We ask that you remain in your car and wear masks. St. Francis medals will be available!
Finally, we will be having a Eucharist Service on Sunday, October 10th! It will not be the normal Eucharist service that you know. Instead, the Diocese has authorized a Presanctified Eucharist service.

We are preparing a special Fall Eucharist Kit and Prayer Guide that will contain pre-sanctified Eucharist for you to use at home during the service. Stay tuned for how to get your Fall Eucharist Kit and Prayer Guide prior to our Eucharist Sunday on October 10th!
Even though we are not gathering physically for worship, there are more ways that ever for us to gather and be present to each other and to God. See you Sunday.

Be safe and may God bless and protect you,
Beth
Looking even further ahead. . .

Mark your calendar for these FALL FELLOWSHIP EVENTS!

In support of parish community fun, Christ Church is planning three Fall Fellowship Events. As conditions allow, these events will occur either on Zoom or campus. Please mark your calendars. More details to come.

Saturday, October 17. Adult Small-Group Dinners! Short Zoom dinner meetings, each for a maximum of 4-5 people; for adult members of Christ Church, past and present.

Saturday, November 14. Family Holiday Traditions! A one-hour facilitated Zoom meeting for all ages, featuring content shared by parish members, including recipes, art, music, and holiday stories.

If you and your family have ideas, questions, or offers to help with any of these events, please let our Fellowship Team hear from you: Sherry Lund, Lenore Lovoi, Carol Wentworth, and Carl Cheney.
Outreach News

Dinners for Maple Street Shelter: We are providing dinner for 140 homeless adults at the Maple Street Shelter in Redwood City on Saturday September 26th and again on Saturday October 17th. Thanks to the amazing cooks in September: Betsy Alexander, Andy & Eda Carlson, Penny McCulloch, Mary Soubirous, Carol Wentworth, Ruth Ann Wrucke. A wonderful Mexican dinner was provided. Volunteers are needed to help make the meal in October. Contact Ruth Ann Wrucke at [email protected] or 650-851-8435 to volunteer.

Linen Drive for Homeless Families: through the end of October we will be conducting a linen drive on behalf of Life Moves for the 23 homeless families living in Haven House in Redwood City and the 10 homeless families living at the Redwood Family Shelter. We need sets of towels (2 bath towels, 2 hand towels and 2 wash cloths) plus warm blankets. If you can provide towels, bring them to the marked box in the breezeway. No human contact needed. Or contact Kathy Kennedy at [email protected] or 650-291-9678 and she can buy towels on your behalf at Target ($12.57 for 2 sets) We also plan to make "No-Sew" fleece blankets which take 1 - 2 hours each to complete. If you can help make blankets, contact Kathy.

Lunches for the frail homeless: On Friday evening October 23rd we need high school and college students to prepare 40 sack lunches for frail homeless adults who are currently housed by Life Moves in motel rooms. Socially distanced lunch preparation will take place on the patio behind the parish hall at 5:30PM. We also need one person to deliver the lunches to Maple Street shelter on Saturday morning October 24th. Contact Kathy Kennedy at [email protected] to volunteer.

Toiletries for the Homeless: Remember travel and those cute little toiletries that hotels used to give out? If you have any or know anyone who does, we are still collecting them for the Maple Street Shelter. Bring them to the church breezeway. No human contact required.
