It won't be long until our bishop-elect, the Rev. Whayne Hougland Jr., will be getting acclimated to life in Western Michigan and in our diocesan community. In his final weeks as rector at St. Luke's in Salisbury, NC, Bishop-Elect Hougland received this human rights award (left) from Church Women United, which is an organization that describes itself as "a racially, culturally, theologically inclusive Christian women's movement, celebrating unity in diversity and working for a world of peace and justice."
And if you haven't seen it, you should take a look at this video, which comes to us from the Diocese of North Carolina. It is a Pop-Up Video (referencing VH-1's popular video show from the 1990s) of Bishop-Elect Hougland and the Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, Bishop of North Carolina and preacher for the consecration, having a conversation about his election. We posted this on Facebook, and Twitter, but if you haven't seen it, click here!

New EfM Materials, Texts and Technology! Is your church interested in EfM?
On July 27, 2013, twelve enthusiastic Education for Ministry mentors met at St. Mark's Grand Rapids to learn more about the new texts and materials that will be introduced this fall. Starting this September, EfM will have a new look, new resources and new technology. Since the changes were made in response to input from participants, everyone is excited about the improvements.
All of the elements that have made EfM a beloved, comprehensive and widely respected theological education program, supporting the ministry of lay people for the last 38 years, will still be in place. New EfM Reading and Reflection Guides, plus standard textbooks for readings in the Christian tradition, will replace the familiar red notebooks.
A group consists of six to twelve learners and a trained mentor meeting weekly over the course of a nine-month academic year. Online groups are also available. If you would like more information, or wish to start a group in your church, please email EfM Diocesan Coordinator, Mary Novello at m.e.novello@comcast.net or click here for more information.
