In this update we provide a summary of the broader EGPS engagement, selected events, news and knowledge work from the last quarter of FY2022.
We would like to highlight recently launched EGPS-supported knowledge products including a new map created by the Extractives-led Local Economic Diversification (ELLED) that compiles key information pertaining to local content in the extractive industries, organized by country. The ELLED Map provides easy-to-access, high-level information for users looking to understand local content-related policy contexts in different host countries, as well as information on relevant initiatives and organizations. Click here to check it out!
This quarter, we launched several publications: A new report, Global Perspective on Coal Jobs and Managing Labor Transition Out of Coal, that explores the challenges of coal mine closure and how to support the transition of affected workers. Click here to download. The African Mining Legislation Atlas (AMLA) project launched 2 new toolkits that break down key issues and approaches to local development and state equity participation in Africa during the Mining Indaba conference.
We are thrilled to announce that the Delve platform was designated as a Digital Public Good by the Digital Public Alliance. Delve was selected as an open data and open content provider with relevance to achieving the SDGs and adherence to digital development standards. This accomplishment demonstrates innovation, collaboration, and the importance of ASM data to help policy makers and practitioners take an informed approach to the sector.

Events
EGPS @ Mining Indaba
As we have done in the past, EGPS participated in the 2022 Africa Mining Indaba conference in Cape Town from May 8-12. The conference brought together African and global leaders from government, business, development institutions, and civil society on theme: “Evolution of African Mining: Investing in the Energy Transition, ESG and Economies”. Five African heads of state and over 37 ministers attended.
At Mining Indaba, the EGPS funded African Mining Legislation Atlas (AMLA) launched two Toolkits. The new toolkits break down key issues and approaches to local development and state equity participation in Africa. The launch was followed by a panel discussion on the evolving approaches to state equity participation.
Sven Renner, the EGPS Program Manager, participated in 4 sessions including 2 on the main stage. The sessions covered protecting and legitimizing artisanal miners across Africa; metals and minerals for the energy transition; and mining and the circular economy.
Despite harmful environmental consequences, coal-based energy production has risen over the past several decades. This new report explores the challenges of coal mine closure and how to support the transition of affected workers — not only those displaced from mining jobs, but also those employed in other parts of the coal value chain or in coal-dependent communities. This report illustrates the basis for developing and general recommendations for adopting forest-smart practices for artisanal and small-scale mining in global and national processes. It also includes a suite of road maps, workplans, and budgets for ground-validating the standard in the pilot sites in Colombia, Peru, Ghana, and Liberia. Click to download
“Indonesia has had a very strong legal basis to mainstream gender in the mining industry,” said Yuli Adiratna, the Indonesian Ministry of Labor Director of Labor Inspections Norms. “We have various regulations that mandate a non-discriminatory approach in the workplace." Read more
