What are some of the benefits of joining a grief group?
We feel less alone.
Grief can feel very lonely, especially when we have lost someone who met many of our relationship needs. We may feel that no one else is hurting the way we are hurting. In a grief support group, we discover that we are not alone.
We can share with those who will listen with understanding.
Some may clearly not want to listen to us. Others may offer glib, useless, and even offensive advice. We need someone who can listen with empathy and understand where we are coming from.
We can learn from one another.
In a grief group, we may encounter others who have been grieving longer than we. We may learn what has helped them in their grief journey and what has not been helpful.
When we help others, we help ourselves.
There is a saying, "You cannot help someone else up a hill without reaching the top yourself." When we reach out with support and understanding to someone who is also grieving, we help ourselves as well. This is the secret of all self-help groups.
Please consider joining The Reverend Malm in August, Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. If you have questions, please email Virginia Monroe at vmonroe@sthomashuntsville.org or call the church, at 256-880-0247
