Transport - Road Charging Plans must be fair to all Drivers

Brussels, 14 May 2012 - The European Commission issued guidelines warning that under EU law road charging schemes must not discriminate against foreign drivers.

The aim is to assist Member States who are considering introducing new charging schemes for private cars.

Vice-President Siim Kallas said: "Non-discrimination is a fundamental right under EU law. It must be as easy for a French or British citizen to drive across Slovenia or Belgium as it is for a resident driver. Road charging systems must be transparent and fair to all."

Transport: Stronger EU-Turkey co-operation sought

EULast 16 May 2012 the Commission Vice-President responsible for transport, Siim Kallas, visited Ankara to enhance transport cooperation between the EU and Turkey. In line with the Commission "positive agenda", Vice-President Kallas discussed the establishment of a roadmap for EU transport relations with Turkey, including regular high-level meetings and the establishment of a structured dialogue with Turkish authorities.

The development of EU-Turkey transport cooperation is very important due to its strategic geographical position at the crossroad between Europe and Middle East and Caucasus, its candidate status and growing market for transport services. During the visit, Vice-President Kallas met the Ministers responsible for Foreign Affairs, EU Affairs and Transport, as well as major transport stakeholders.

"The talks covered the future of our partnership for all transport modes" said Vice-President Kallas. "The successful dialogue on aviation last April in Istanbul has been a positive first step towards stronger cooperation. We want to achieve full integration of Turkey into the EU aviation system as soon as possible in order to provide both Turkish and EU citizens with more connections and cheaper and safer flights".

Aberdeen Car Club (UK)  is going to be the World 1st to trial Hydrogen fuel cell cars

Aberdeen Hydrogen Car Club Aberdeen's newly-established Commonwheels car club is to be the first in the world to trial hydrogen fuel cell cars.

Hyundai is loaning Commonwheels two of its left-hand-drive fuel cell vehicles ahead of the All Energy Conference. Energy storage clean fuel firm ITM Power is providing a mobile hydrogen re-fuelling station HFuel to keep the cars running.

Commonwheels members will have the opportunity to drive the Hyundai SUVs, which emit only water vapour, before the renewable energy event at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre where the cars will refuel and be on show, along with other green vehicles, on the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (SHFCA) stand.

Aberdeen City Council chief executive Valerie Watts said: "This is a major coup for Aberdeen and testament to the efforts of the Enterprise, Planning and Infrastructure officers involved.

The Website of the Month: the Zero Emissions Platform  (ZEP)

 Zero Emissions Platform

This month EPN Consulting has chosen the Zero Emissions Platform.

Founded in 2005, the European Technology Platform for Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants (ZEP) is a unique coalition of stakeholders united in their support for CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) as a key technology for combating climate change. ZEP serves as advisor to the European Commission on the research, demonstration and deployment of CCS .

The European utilities, petroleum companies, equipment suppliers, scientists, academics and environmental NGOs that together form ZEP have three main goals:

  1. Enable CCS  as a key technology for combating climate change.
  2. Make CCS technology commercially viable by 2020 via an EU-backed demonstration programme.
  3. Accelerate R&D into next-generation CCS  technology and its wide deployment post-2020.

ZEP was born out of the EU's recognition of CCS as a key component of any future sustainable energy system. Its mission: to identify and remove the barriers to creating highly efficient power plants - with near-zero emissions.
