Colorado Mountain College guided by Mountain Futures
Written by: Carrie Besnette Hauser, CMC President and CEO
Hours before many of us were preparing for a long weekend to celebrate our nation’s birthday, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a landmark opinion on race-based preferences in college admissions.
The court’s majority found that the explicit use of racial preferences in admission decisions at Harvard and the University of North Carolina — both highly selective universities — violated the equal protection clause found in the 14th amendment of the Constitution. Though the result surprised few given the court’s recent history, the decision nevertheless represented a jolt to higher education.
Immediately following the SCOTUS opinion, leaders at Colorado Mountain College pored through the 261-page document and confirmed that it meant little to CMC in practical terms.
That’s because CMC, established in 1965, has always been an open-access institution that invites everyone into its campuses and classrooms, regardless of race, socioeconomic status or station in life. CMC exists to enable opportunities for all — not to sort or select students out.
Even so, within hours of the high court’s announcement, the team at CMC engaged in a college-wide audit of all programs and services to ensure their compliance with the nation’s new law. (The audit revealed no violations; all programs and services were already comfortably in compliance).

Saving the Planet One Ski Jacket at a Time
CMC Aspen is introducing a new outdoor soft goods manufacturing certificate program this fall, catering to students passionate about technical apparel design, sustainability, and upcycling. This 16-credit, six-class program aims to breathe new life into used garments, contributing to a more sustainable clothing industry by preventing items from ending up in landfills.
The program's focus on reintegrating garments into the supply chain, aligns with outdoor brands' growing interest in upcycled clothing. The curriculum covers various aspects, including Entrepreneurial Operations, Garment Sewing and Design, Global Action-Sport Business, and Introduction to Sustainability.
The program's goal is to equip students with skills to support businesses in expanding their upcycling initiatives. Students will gain practical knowledge, from initial clothing design to recycling and repairing secondhand goods, aligning with the trend of 'reshoring' soft goods production in the United States. Additionally, the hands-on sewing and design skills students acquire will open doors to internships with major companies or allow them to launch their own clothing businesses.
