CMC Steamboat Springs benefits from new endowments in honor of Stephan W. Kaczynski

Stephan Walter Kaczynski was only 27 when he passed away while attending CMC in Steamboat Springs. Now his parents, Walter and Cindy Kaczynski and their daughter Donna Kaczynski, have established three generous endowments with the CMC Foundation that will enable Stephan’s memory to live on in perpetuity.

“Stephan’s lifelong dream was to live and work in the Colorado Rockies,” the Kaczynskis wrote in a statement. “We are humbled and grateful for the opportunity to give back in a meaningful way to the community that embraced him so warmly.”

The first endowment is the Stephan W. Kaczynski Memorial Professorship in Nursing, which will fund a named professorship in nursing at the college, helping to attract and retain experienced nursing educators to the CMC Steamboat Springs campus. The second and third endowments will create two Stephan W. Kaczynski Memorial Endowed Scholarships for students in nursing and resort management. Together, these scholarships will support three students every year in perpetuity.

“It is bittersweet of course, but that kind of funding will help many others achieve their dreams of success and keep Stephan's memory and legacy alive through them,” said Terry Hunter, CMC Steamboat Springs professor of resort management, who had the honor of teaching Stephan. “Stephan was a good guy, a good student and someone we should all admire and respect in his outlook and efforts to enjoy what was sadly an all too brief, but well-lived life.”

Free ESL classes for local Breckenridge hospitality staff

Colorado Mountain College Breckenridge has started free ESL courses for local employees in the hospitality industry, thanks to generous donations from community members as well as financial support from the Summit Foundation, Hughes Family, and Breckenridge Ski Resort. The program offers a morning and afternoon section each offering the opportunity for 25 students to increase their English language skills.

The classes focus on helping individuals develop English skills that they can use in their workplace, which has resulted in increased confidence and security among students. The program has received interest from various local businesses such as Hearthstone, Cool River, Beaver Run, Ale House, Giampietros, Kenosha, La Francaise, Blue Moose, and Breckenridge Grand Vacations properties.

The success of the program has led to plans for a summer term. To be eligible for the program, individuals must work in Breckenridge.
