CMC Board of Trustees selected for national leadership award

The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges selected CMC’s Board of Trustees as one of five boards – one public college, two private universities and two public college or university foundations – nationally to receive its John W. Nason Award for Board Leadership. The Nason Award, established in 1992, is provided to higher education governing boards across the country that demonstrate exceptional leadership and initiative.

“The nation is home to some 4,000 colleges and universities and nearly as many governing boards, and yet, there are few boards that deserve special recognition more for their courage, wisdom and foresight,” said Dr. Carrie Besnette Hauser, CMC president and CEO. “CMC is more relevant to and celebrated by its communities than ever before, in large part because the courageous and thoughtful individuals that comprise its elected governing board.”

The CMC Board received the John W. Nason Award in recognition for its commitment to addressing the needs of students and the region, investing in affordable housing and expanding academic programming for high-demand fields, among other initiatives.

FirstBank brings a CMC education within reach

Ali Cottle is a Roaring Fork Valley local who earned a Colorado Mountain College degree without leaving the valley, thanks in large part to FirstBank. In doing so, she joined more than 50 students since 2014 from CMC’s mountain region who have received financial support from Colorado’s largest locally owned bank.

After high school, Cottle opted out of the traditional college trajectory and instead, jumped straight into the workforce at age 18, earning a spot on the Aspen Mountain Ski Patrol. However, after nine years on the patrol and eight reconstructive knee surgeries, Cottle heeded her orthopedic surgeon’s advice and changed course.

That decision led her to Colorado Mountain College, where she learned she could earn an associate degree in early childhood education and receive financial assistance through FirstBank scholarship funds to pursue her goals. Cottle graduated with an AAS in 2017 and opened her own home daycare in 2020.

Campus leader Heather Exby plans retirement

Heather Exby, Vice President and Dean of the Glenwood Center and Spring Valley campus, is retiring at the end of the spring semester after eight years of service to CMC. During her tenure, Exby led the Promise of Spring Valley capital campaign, raising $5 million and transforming the Spring Valley campus with the J. Robert Young Alpine Ascent Center, the Outdoor Leadership Center & Field House, a renovated residence hall, the Paul & Shirley Bushong Student Center, a mountain bike trail system, and a solar array with its own battery storage complex.

“I’ve been so fortunate to have been the kind of leader I always wanted to be and build a team that has grown and stepped up to every single challenge that has been laid before them,” Exby said. “I really care about the people I’ve worked with and about creating a learning environment for our students that is as personal and accepting as possible.”

Exby will stand on stage once more for spring commencement in May before she retires at the end of spring semester.
