 CCLA Spotlight:
Summer Is Almost Here!

Hello Eagles!

This is it! The final Eagle Newsletter of the school year. As we get ready for summer, I wanted to devote this publication to sharing summer opportunities. "Summer learning loss" is especially persistent in youth from low income communities. In fact, 50% of the achievement gap between low- and high-income youth is attributed to summer learning loss (Alexander, Entwisle, & Olson, 2007) due to barriers related to cost and proximity. With the majority of our campus classifying as "low-income" per free and reduced lunch data, I wanted to make sure that our community was not left behind.

Here is a list of some of the summer programming available in our community at little to no cost. I will be updating this list on my facebook page or you can email questions as you have them over the summer.

**Important: do you receive free or reduced-price lunch? Meals are still available in the summer! No one in our community should go hungry.**

In early to mid-June, the summer meal sites will be posted at  http://www.cde.ca.gov/ds/sh/sn/summersites.asp. Also, parents can call site directors listed under the 2012 Summer Feeding Map to determine if meals will be served at the same locations in 2013. There is also a Hunger Hotline to get more information on meal sites - 1-866-3HUNGRY (1-866-348-6479) or 1-877-8HAMBRE (1-877-842-6273).

Thank you for a wonderful year, congrats to our graduating seniors, and have a safe and healthy summer.

Gratefully,

 Jennie, CCLA's Community School Coordinator
