What We're Working On

A Behind the Scenes Look at the Work of the Chamber

The Children's Movement of Florida: All In for Early Learning Day

January 26 was the statewide "All In for Early Learning Day", an initiative led by The Children's Movement of Florida. In Volusia County, key stakeholders met at the Daytona Regional Chamber to mark the occasion and to collaborate. Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia CEO, DJ Lebo, shared statistics and data with the group.

Proclamations declaring January 26 as All In for Early Learning Day were received from Volusia County, Flagler County, City of Daytona Beach, and City of Holly Hill. Attendees included early learning practitioners and providers as well as community and business leaders all of whom were discussing the importance of supporting the first five years of a child's life and development.

Access to high-quality early learning is both a current and future workforce issue. Children who participate in early learning programs see increased success in school and life, which positions them for fulfilling roles in the community. Increased access and affordability for these programs also allows parents to participate in the workforce in greater numbers, with less stress and enhanced productivity.

You Don't Know What You Don't Know: How to Find Resources You Need

By Kathy Grosskurth, Bookkeeping Clean and Simple

I have spoken to quite a few people in the last couple of weeks because it’s the start of tax season (though I don’t do taxes myself, but that’s a topic for another day).

And inevitably this topic continues to bubble up over and over again in our conversations: "You don’t know what you don’t know." This statement is true of so many people starting their own businesses.

Many of us start businesses with a great idea or a true passion for what we’re doing: some of us possess special skills (tax, accounting, coaching) while others enjoy certain hobbies (baking, art, music), while others may want the flexibility of striking out on their own.

Regardless of the reason, millions of people start their business with high hopes, only to realize that they don’t know the first thing about running a business: the various legal requirements to set it up, recordkeeping requirements, payroll regulations, paying taxes. Well, you get the idea.
