Here are the top ways the world could take on climate change in 2020
By Sierra Garcia,
Grist,
March 19, 2020
The climate think tank
Project Drawdown
first took on
the question “what’s really the best way to stop climate change” in 2017 — and came up with a hundred answers, from cutting food waste to implementing alternative refrigerants. Now, Project Drawdown has updated its original list to incorporate the latest findings.
The name references the day when humanity switches from emitting carbon dioxide to storing it and begins drawing down the carbon we’ve dumped into the atmosphere. The team compiled its recommendations, which were first published as a bestselling
coffee table book
, based on rigorous scientific analysis of the costs and carbon savings of every solution available at scale today.
Jonathan Foley, an environmental scientist and the executive director of Project Drawdown...explained why we don’t need technological breakthroughs or political miracles to bring the world to net-zero carbon emissions.

|
What is Project Drawdown®?
Project Drawdown is a nonprofit organization and coalition of scholars, scientists, entrepreneurs, and advocates from across the globe that is mapping, measuring, modeling, and communicating about a collective array of substantive solutions to global warming, with the goal of reaching drawdown.

Will the coronavirus kill the oil industry?
By Bill McKibben,
The New Yorker
,
April 9, 2020
It’s hard to get mad at a virus, but it’s easy to be enraged by people and institutions that are disregarding the threat it poses in order to further their own profits. Last week, I
wrote
about how construction is set to resume on the Keystone XL oil pipeline, and how it will, in the process, risk the health of indigenous Americans, by bringing in workers from around the country to remote rural areas. (I didn’t know at the time that
JPMorgan Chase
, the world’s
biggest fossil-fuel lender
, had helped issue a billion-dollar bond to assist.)

By Luis Davila,
Morning Consul
t,
April 8, 2020
As we face a once-in-a-lifetime crisis due to the effects of the coronavirus, we also have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reform our energy system to one that is cleaner, safer and more equitable. This improved system can deliver local, affordable and clean energy options to all energy customers, especially low-income families who will be
disproportionately affected
by the effects of the coronavirus.

Sandwich High School student teams with Cape Light Compact, others to promote virtual home energy audits
Coronavirus isn't stopping this youth's climate action work
Nico Gentile, a Sandwich High School student and member of the Climate Collaborative's Youth Climate Action Network team, has been focused on climate change "for a long time" (i.e., since seventh grade).
As a several-year member and current president of the Sandwich High School STEM Academy Science Club, Gentile has cirected his climate attention on educating youth about climate change and making his school and community more climate-friendly. A co-organizer of the Youth Climate Action Summit, which drew more than 100 attendees from across the Cape last November, Nico's group also built a school garden and were in process of raising money to plant trees around the school when the virus outbreak occurred.
Since then, Nico's been working with Cape Light Compact and RISE Engineering, a team that designed remote home energy audits to help get online home energy audits up and running and volunteers to test it. "I've heard amazing things about the remote HEA, which the CLC released las week," he explained. "My experience with the Summit and the Club has shown me how one can make climate-friendly modifications to homes hrough energy audits, which offer the public a free opportunity to improve their homes
and
community environments. Now, through CLC's Virtual Home Energy Audits (see below) and with so many people at home with freer schedules, this is a great opportunity to take advantage of these audits. Further, many modifications such as more energy efficient lightbulbs can be delivered to your house in a social-distancing-compliant way."
Nico is also talking with the CLC about helping market the organization's vast array of energy efficiency programs to students and families on the Cape. To learn more about Nico's work, email us at
