SUPERINTENDENT FEAGINS' VIP TOUR

On April 1, Dr. Marie Feagins officially began her tenure as Superintendent of Memphis-Shelby County Schools. And because Dr. Feagins is no stranger to this work, she has dedicated the entire month of April to VIP Tours at schools and other community entities throughout the District. Upcoming dates include April 19th (District 4), April 22nd (District 3), April 26th (District 2), and April 29th (District 1). For more information on locations and times, visit the MSCS website or MSCS's Facebook page.

In addition to the VIP Tours, Dr. Feagins recently announced her transition team that will help guide her during her first 100 days and throughout her tenure as Superintendent. Dr. Feagins plans to rely on this group of former and current superintendents for support during her transition to the role by working with the Council of the Great City Schools, a national coalition of big-city districts. This eight-person team, including three from the Council of the Great City Schools, will support Feagins during her early months as a new superintendent.

The council’s work in Memphis could serve as a pilot project for future educators new to the superintendency.

So who's guiding the new leader of MSCS?

Michael Hinojosa

Superintendent-in-residence at the council, and a former superintendent for 27 years, with stints at Dallas Independent School District and Cobb County School District in Georgia.

Ray Hart

Executive director of the council, who has worked with federal agencies including the U.S. Department of Education.

Michael Casserly

Strategic adviser and former executive director of the council.

Adrienne Battle

Superintendent of Metro Nashville Public Schools.

Sharon Contreras

Former superintendent of Guilford County Schools in North Carolina.

Barbara Jenkins

Former superintendent of Orange County Public Schools in Florida.

Aleesia Johnson

Superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools.

Carol Johnson Dean

Former superintendent of Memphis City Schools.

TCAP & TN READY TESTING

State achievement testing has started for students all across the state of Tennessee. TCAP/TN Ready and End of Course (EOC) testing began Monday, April 15, and will continue through Tuesday, April 30. Below are a few tips to help your student prepare at home and during the test.

Before the Test

  • Practice good study habits! Review your notes daily, make a study guide, etc.
  • Gather everything you need for the test and have it ready to go so you don’t have to rush the morning of the test.
  • Get a good night’s sleep, and arrive early for the test so that you feel comfortable and settled.

During the Test

  • Read/listen to all of the instructions carefully.
  • If you’re provided with scratch paper, use it! You may need to write down all of your formulas, facts, etc. before the test begins.
  • Make sure you answer all of the questions, and check your work!

We're sending great vibes and best wishes to all students during this testing window!

TENNESSEE VOUCHER BILL

The fate of the Tennessee Voucher Bill is up in the air.

The Senate Finance Ways and Means Committee, which had been scheduled to take up the bill Monday, was bumped to Tuesday after the committee's preceding meeting was delayed by nearly two hours, around the time Senate leaders were seen leaving Lee’s office Monday.

Senate Bill 503/House Bill 1183 remains on the calendar for the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday, and the House Finance Subcommittee on Wednesday, but there's no indication the Senate and House have made progress towards a deal.

If lawmakers adjourn for the year without taking up the proposal, the legislation will be dead, as a new General Assembly will be sworn in after elections this fall. The governor could call the legislature back for a special legislative session to take up the matter, though doing so would likely not be welcomed, as it would call lawmakers off the campaign trail.
