PRIDE at Work:

How to Build a SOGIE Inclusive Workplace

As we celebrate PRIDE month, we wish to amplify movements and advocacies that center on the LGBTQ+ communities. To start, we take you to the recent developments in workplace diversity and inclusion in the context of SOGIE.

SOGIE or sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression are important elements in diversity, inclusion, and equality. In May 2022, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) World Business Pride announced a momentous partnership with the Open for Business coalition, where they aim to push LGBTQIA inclusion in the workplace.

Welcoming various SOGIE at work

ICC Chief of Staff and WBP Co-sponsor Quinlan Carthane acknowledges the importance of this milestone. “This partnership with Open for Business is a significant opportunity to progress our shared commitment to inclusive economies with insightful analyses, best practices, and safe spaces for engaged discussion among business leaders capable of shaping working cultures to welcome and support diverse talent,” says Carthane.

Echoing this statement, the International Labour Organization (ILO) also published a learning guide on the inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTQ+) persons in the world of work. The publication imparts knowledge on initiating and fostering inclusive environments for all. It is also a response to the violence, harassment, stigma, and discrimination faced by the queer community all over the world. “LGBTIQ+ workers are often denied opportunities throughout all stages of the employment cycle,” a quote extracted from the ILO publication.

The Challenge for Leaders

In revolutionizing the workplace and creating a welcoming environment for all, a specific responsibility is given to new leaders–be at the forefront of embracing diversity and inclusion. There is talent and innovation to be harnessed from a diverse team, and leaders have the power to ensure representation at work.
