Sunday Reflection
St. John's Church, Lafayette Square
July 18, 2021
Good morning St. John's Community,
The opening collect for this Sunday, which parishes far and wide will pray together is one of my favorites.

"Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord..."

It reminds me that prayer is so much more than the words we can craft to offer to God. We pray now, together, because Jesus Christ has made our life with God possible. There is a wonderful section in the Catechism in the back of the Book of Common Prayer that is entirely devoted to asking questions about the meaning of prayer and worship. In this, prayer is defined as "responding to God, by thoughts and by deeds, with or without words."

How are you praying these days? What does your responding to God look like right now?

I look forward to praying with you this morning at church.
