New Year, New Laws
It’s the most wonderful time of the year… for attorneys. That’s because with a new year come new laws – hundreds of them. But don’t worry if you haven’t read through them all; we have. Some of the biggest changes are those surrounding the new federal “SECURE Act” (Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act), which is aimed at helping people save money for retirement.

In this issue of The Elder Law Minute , we break down what you need to know about the new tax laws, the new Illinois Trust Code and how they could impact estate plans. If your clients need a hand updating their documents, our team of attorneys is here to help.

Is Your Estate Plan Up to Date?
Think fast: When was the last time you updated your estate plan? Do you need to make changes to your beneficiaries, or the people you appointed to help you if you become disabled or need someone to administer your estate when you die? If it’s been a while, the beginning of the year is the perfect time to make sure your estate planning documents are up to date.

If you’ve had any major life events – a marriage, a divorce, a birth or a death (change of address or married name doesn’t count) – or if someone has ticked you off to the point of no return, your estate plan needs to reflect this. Otherwise, your assets could wind up with someone unintended, like an ex-spouse, or you could accidentally leave new family members out of your will. Give us a call for a free 15-minute consultation at 630-782-1766.
