Instead of racing this weekend, I volunteered for Dare2Tri to be a guide for a beginner visually impaired athlete during a three-day clinic. This is Anthony, who had a stroke three years ago and woke up from a coma after many months. He lost 95% of his vision, most of his pre-stroke memory and some motor skills. This weekend was the first time he had been on a bike since he was 15 years old, in a wetsuit, swimming in open water and racing.
While he only fell off the tandem bike once (yes, I had a heart attack until he told me he no longer feels pain), had to bail during the swim (got to practice my life guard skills to tow him to the kayak), and liked walking so he wouldn’t hurt himself running (58-minute 5Ks rock!), this was a rewarding and worthwhile experience. You cannot even imagine the joy you bring to disabled athletes as they cross the finish line. I encourage everyone to volunteer. Enabling your athlete to finish a race is so much more rewarding than a personal record (well, almost).
