March & April 2023

April Greetings

Hello everyone! This month’s newsletter combines our news from March and April and contains several useful articles written by attorneys here at Generation Law. The first, by Andrea Kovar, covers Medicare for adults under age 65. The second, by Krystian Seebert, discusses the challenges people face when attempting to use financial powers of attorney.

Unlike emails you may receive from other attorneys, we write all our articles ourselves to give you news and information most relevant to you and the ones you love.

FIRM BRIEF

Meet Blue, Our Newest Team Member

Generation Law has always been a dog-friendly place and has hosted foster dogs as part-time help when needed. Blue is our first full-time office dog, and we could not be more thrilled to have her with us.

At a mere five months old, this mini Bernedoodle comes to the office every day (with her human, Dirk) full of enthusiasm. She spreads joy as she does her work - entertaining her co-workers and taking them for occasional walks. Blue is such a people-person that she is already vying for a promotion as “client greeter.”

On the rare occasion that she is not working, she attends puppy school or naps in her special cubicle.

We asked Dirk what Blue would say about the office if she could speak.

Here is what he said:

  1. Our clients are fun to interact with.
  2. We have too much chocolate in our conference rooms that she is not allowed to eat.
  3. The people around here use big words but seem to know what they’re talking about.

At your next appointment, you can meet Blue and see for yourself that her impressions of Generation Law are spot on.

Generation Law Employee Spotlight

Dirk Bromberek, J.D.

Dirk has been a part of the Generation Law team for over three years. He focuses his practice on adult and minor guardianships and estate administration. Dirk enjoys helping families navigate the judicial process during some of the most difficult times of their lives.

Outside of work (when Blue is not taking him for walks) Dirk is an avid sports fan - watching, as well as playing, hockey and golf. Topping his bucket list, is visiting all 30 of the nation’s Major League Baseball stadiums. Next up is Fenway Park in Boston.

Other News

Ben Neiburger and Melissa Johnson as members of the Legislative Committee of the Illinois Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA-IL), participated in blocking proposed legislation that would prohibit someone from having more than eight ounces of a person’s cremated remains, forcing families to pay for burial of the other remains.

In that committee, Ben Neiburger spearheaded legislation to force financial institutions to accept financial powers of attorneys more readily. Unfortunately, the banking industry blocked these efforts. Ben will be working with banking lobbyists on a solution that will ensure better acceptance of powers of attorney.

Andrea Kovar gave a presentation at a seminar for caregivers hosted by the Holy Apostles Caregivers Support Group, that addressed the essential legal and financial documents everyone should put in place to protect themselves and their loved ones during incapacity and at death.

Ben Neiburger and Krystian Seebert are updating a chapter on “Tax Planning for the Elderly” for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education's (IICLE) handbook entitled, Advising Elderly Clients and Their Families 2023 Edition.

Ben Neiburger will be attending the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) annual meeting in Puerto Rico in early May.

Where in the World is Ben?

Let’s put our hands together for Ben Neiburger who took home the coveted "Multisport Master" belt buckle from the Multisport National Championship Festival, in Irving Texas, April 19-23.

To earn this prize, Ben competed in six races over five days and tried, successfully, not to come in last place in any of the races:

  • 750m Open Water Swim Race
  • Super Sprint Triathlon Nationals (250m swim, 5k bike, 1.2k run)
  • Draft Legal Sprint Triathlon Nationals (750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run)
  • Aquathlon Nationals (1000m swim, 5k run)
  • Duathlon Nationals (10k run, 40k bike, 5k run)
  • Mixed Team Super Sprint Relay (all members were over age 50)

Ben’s coaching team tried to add up all the mileage but gave up somewhere on day two, commenting that he approached the races with impeccable pacing, spirit & grit. In his own words, "I specialize in misery endurance."

He definitely endured out there! CONGRATULATIONS, Ben!!
